We’re nearly fifteen years into the 21st century and despite the frequent predictions of the implosion of cinema, the industry and medium is still going strong. While much has been made recently about the end of celluloid, a great deal of the best cinematic work in the past decade has been captured photochemically in addition to digitally as a new video on Vimeo can attest.

12 Years A Slave, Steve McQueen
While "12 Years A Slave" was nominated for an Oscar in nine categories, (winning three: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay) we'd argue there was a tenth nod it should've gotten: recognition for the work of cinematographer Sean Bobbitt. He's been a longtime collaborator with Steve McQueen, and an integral contributor to the visual look of his films. This 15-minute video details that relationship.

Oldboy
With Park Chan-wook's entire vengeance trilogy getting remade (“Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance” just nabbed a helmer, while "Sympathy For Lady Vengeance" starring Charlize Theron continues to develop), Spike Lee's stab at "Oldboy" will be first at the gate, and likely the most scrutinized. The original is beloved in many quarters, with fans openly wondering how this Hollywood take will deal with some of the darker corners of the South Korean version.

“I’m full of epic stories,” the loquacious Derek Cianfrance told Vanity Fair recently. And it’s true. We sat down with the director and co-writer behind “The Place Beyond The Pines,” and Cianfrance was indeed, full of amazing stories. He told us in the part of our interview we ran yesterday that that he had to pare down a 158 page script to 120 pages to earn his financing. So, did the filmmaker do a rewrite? Nope. He increased the margins as far as they would go and then selected the smallest font possible and got down to 120 pages. The financiers didn’t notice and he got his green light. Crafty, right?

But now that the month's coming to a close, we can start taking the long-term view of the year ahead, and in particular the new talent to come.
