There’s a vague sense of cruelty to the direct-to-DVD market, which is used to solely accommodate cheap genre products, but more often seems like a dumping ground for unusual niche projects that die a slow death on the festival circuit. They usually get treated much like the aptly titled “American Loser,” a dramatic half-comedy with Seann William Scott that went through a number of title changes before being dumped onto the market. The film now carries a title that not only insults the lead character, and by extension Scott (who has experimented a few times in risky projects that ended up with negligible releases), but it cravenly attempts to exploit the brand name for which he is known, “American Pie.”

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival this week is "Goon," a hockey comedy co-written by Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen's writing partner Evan Goldberg, which, it should be noted, is not the David Fincher-produced animation adaptation of the Eric Powell comic book "The Goon" nor is it the two-part Kevin Smith hockey epic "Hit Somebody" (which will presumably be the "Che" of bawdy hockey comedies). What it is, as we noted when the red band trailer debuted, a mediocre-looking comedy about a hockey coach who recruits a thug (Sean William Scott) to stop a violence-prone opponent (Liev Schreiber), notable only for Schreiber's truly awesome mustache.

This One Time, At Band Camp....AgainListen, we know, somebody out there is renting/buying/watching those "American Pie" spinoff straight-to-video sequels in big enough quantities that Universal is getting the old gang back together. Either that, or they're hoping to squeeze the last bit of bucks out of an aging franchise with the added bonus that most of the cast is still going to come cheap. It's probably somewhere in the middle.

While hockey isn't necessarily our principle area of expertise, we're quietly looking forward to the Canadian hockey comedy "Goon." Written by "Knocked Up" star Jay Baruchel with Evan Goldberg (who co-wrote "Superbad" and "Pineapple Express" with Seth Rogen), it stars Seann William Scott as a bouncer who joins a struggling hockey team, and is currently filming in Winnipeg under the eyes of "Fubar" director Michael Dowse.
