“Seven Psychopaths” was released back in October to rather tepid fanfare. The film was marginally successful financially and may not have been as beloved as Martin McDonagh’s first feature-length film “In Bruges,” but it still got its fair share of positive reviews. The picture will look to gain some more fans as the Blu-Ray/DVD arrives in stores today, and to honor its release, a deleted scene has just been posted online.

He won an Oscar for his first short film, "Six Shooter," and a few years later wrote and directed the hilarious, soulful black comedy "In Bruges," which became a serious hit on the festival circuit and earned him an Oscar nomination for the screenplay.

Despite a recent lull in box-office activity, the last two weeks feel distinctly like summer sessions, with “Taken 2” pulling in blockbuster numbers at the top spot. Though critical reception was harsh, the picture seems as if it will lose only slightly more than half its audience in its second frame, when most figured it would lose a significant percentage from that opening weekend.

Hello, In Theaters friends! I’m back (for a week)! Did you miss me? Doesn’t Emma take good care of you? She writes better headlines than I do. But I celebrate Cage’s Festival of Wigs more! Hope you all have your Oscar racing pants on because that one is underway! In fact, I will be giving out a few awards of my own... This week sees the release of TIFF darling “Argo,” Ben Affleck’s Iran hostage thrilla, the return of truly delightful twisted person Martin McDonagh with “Seven Psychopaths,” something called “Sinister,” Kevin James getting punched and falling down a lot in “Here Comes the Boom,” and Ayn Rand propaganda! Fun times to be had by all, even the psychopaths. There’s also a metric butt-ton of indie festival goodness making its way into local art houses and multiplexes so now might be time to catch up with the cool kids (by cool kids I mean film bloggers who go to all the festivals... whether or not they are cool is up to you!).

It would seem that following the success of "In Bruges," writer/director Martin McDonagh went to Hollywood -- and didn't like the experience. A meta riff on making movies, "Seven Psychopaths" is a sneering send-up of the industry that also revels in its action movie clichés. But if there is one thing certain about McDonagh's sophomore feature film, it's that it's bigger in every sense than his debut. Boasting lots of gunplay, a big extended cast of stars willing to play along and a less witty, broader sense of humor, McDonagh tries to have it both ways by playing to the cheap seats while pointing out how absurd it is at the same time.
