With the Toronto International Film Festival in full swing, all sorts of deals are being made and mended, and the news is coming fast and furiously, straight from the great white north. Predictably, we're doing all we can to keep up with the news, with a rundown that includes the start date for Tom Hanks' next feature, a big time cast member joining David Gordon Green's "Manglehorn," information on Tommy Lee Jones' next directorial project, a legendary name lending a hand to Elijah Wood's new horror movie and word that a creepy old dude will be joining a young adult novel adaptation.

To an actor, a franchise is an attractive thing: it could mean years (maybe even decades) of solid, dependable work, with each subsequent installment usually incentivized to some degree and with the sense of community and family growing with each outing (many of the "Harry Potter" actors, both young and old, equated the experience to going back to school). In the mad scramble for big studio parts, a franchise is a sturdily proven gig. Which makes actors who pass on potential franchises somewhat baffling (remember when Josh Hartnett was repeatedly courted for Superman?)... Yet pass they do. While Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson ended up scoring the pivotal leads in "Fifty Shades of Grey," a number of Hollywood's elite passed on the project. Franchise schmanchise.

Shailene Woodley, Divergent
So Shailene Woodley, who will no longer appear in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and is reportedly being replaced in part 3 all together, got kicked in the teeth today, right? That and the fact that there were those vile comic book nerd posts a while back questioning her attractiveness (like those guys wouldn't dream to sit next to her, let alone date her). Meh, not so much. In fact, it's kind of been her day. She showed up in the trailer for "The Spectacular Now," this morning, one of Sundance 2013's biggest hits and now new images of "Divergent" have been released. What's "Divergent"? Well, a sci-fi-ish young adult movie adaptation that looks like it's going to be as popular as "The Hunger Games" if audience fan buzz is any indication.

Well folks, the first batch of nominees this awards season have been revealed, with the Gotham Independent Film Award nominations landing this morning, giving an early peek at what will likely be some strong contenders down the line. Bear in mind, the Gotham Awards have little bearing on the eventual Oscar nods with only last year's Best Feature winner "Winter's Bone" factoring into the proceedings at the Kodak Theater. However, it does represent a good chunk of what you might see at the Independent Spirit Awards later in the year and if anything, these nominations confirm that Fox Searchlight is going to have another banner year on the statue circuit.

In contrast to the Best Actor & Actress race, which we've examined in the last few weeks, the supporting categories are looking much more open. A-list movie stars like Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz and Cate Blanchett, who've all figured in recent years, are mostly absent from contention, and only a few performances have really planted a flag in the category, with some initially strong contenders already starting to slip away.

If the reviews out of Telluride and Toronto are anything to go by, and they usually are, Alexander Payne and George Clooney may very well need to book an appointment with their respective tailors for sometime mid-February.

The sleeper success of "Easy A" seems to have brought good fortune on the major players involved. It certainly launched the career of already rising star Emma Stone into the stratosphere, with Will Gluck quickly moving up the ladder with "Friends With Benefits" opening this past weekend, with a few more projects in the works including another team-up with Stone and an adaptation of "Sex On The Moon." Moreover, he also inked a two-year deal with Sony. Not bad. And if we're feeling generous, we'll even say that Penn Badgley's recent casting in "Greetings From Tim Buckley" where he'll play Jeff Buckley certainly wasn't hurt by his turn as the harmless love interest in the comedy. Now, another name from the film is ready to capitalize on its success.

Jennifer Lawrence Is Not A Frontrunner For The RoleLess than 24 hours after Hailee Steinfeld, Abigail Breslin and Jennifer Lawrence emerged as contenders for the highly touted role of Katniss Everdeen in the gestating "Hunger Games," some more, pretty obvious names emerged. Talent that would be on any director or casting agent's wishlist for a role that needs a young female lead.
