In Case You Had Any Doubt, 'Shame' Is Officially Rated NC-17

Ever since the film first unspooled at the Venice Film Festival, the big question surrounding Steve McQueen's "Shame" was who would decide to take on the risky, explicit film about sex addiction that due to its graphic content was headed for an NC-17 rating. As those who have seen it already know, the picture is a finely honed and paced piece of work and it's difficult to know what McQueen could cut to secure a much more box office and marketing friendly R-rating, but he put the ball back in the distributor's court. If anyone decided to take on the movie, they would have to take "Shame" as is. Well, the always adventurous Fox Searchlight stepped up and acquired it at TIFF and as expected, the movie has officially been given an NC-17 grade by the MPAA.

Sex, addiction, attraction, need, loneliness, fear, desire, connection, emptiness. There is so much to discover below the chilly surface of Steve McQueen's "Shame" that it's no wonder the film has been slaying critics and audiences during its fall festival run, which has seen the movie play Venice, Telluride, TIFF, NYFF, BFI London Film Festival and next the Festival Du Nouveau Cinema. Until now, unless you managed to catch one of those screenings, the only taste of the film has come from an array of stills and a couple of clips, but the first trailer, debuted at the Guardian, is a great sampler of what the movie has in store for viewers.

When our own Oli Lyttleton saw "Shame" in Venice he declared Michael Fassbender's performance a "tour-de-force." When this writer caught up with it at TIFF, I couldn't help but agree and with the rest of the Playlist staffers screening it today at NYFF, one of them said that "Fassbender's performance is easily the strongest male performance of the year." Yes, he's that good in Steve McQueen's "Shame" but the question now to be answered is how the Academy will respond.

The best films aren't necessarily the ones you walk out of raving about, but the ones that haunt you, lingering on your mind for the days, weeks and months afterwards. When we saw "Shame," Steve McQueen's follow up to his debut "Hunger," which reteams the director with star Michael Fassbender, we liked it very, very much indeed, but had a few issues with it that perhaps stopped it from reaching the very top tier of films we saw in Venice.

Michael Fassbender Takes Best Actor, Chinese Surprise Film 'People Mountain People Sea' Wins DirectorWe might have abandoned the Lido a few days ago, but somehow festival organizers felt able to go on with the final awards ceremony without us this evening. With a jury led by Darren Aronofsky that also included David Byrne, Todd Haynes, Mario Martone, André Téchiné, Ejia-Liisa Ahtila and Alba Rorwacher, it was anyone's game, although for much of the week, talk had pegged Steve McQueen's "Shame" and Yorgos Lanthimos' "Alps" as potential front-runners for the big prize, the Golden Lion. However, the winner turned out to be something of a surprise, albeit one that buzz was tipped off to in the run-up to the awards.

That was fast, although not unexpected. After excellent reviews out of Venice and Telluride (see our Lido review here), Fox Seachlight has picked up the North American domestic rights to "Shame," the follow-up, sophomore directorial effort by British artist-turned-director Steve McQueen.
