Screenwriters Turned Directors, Best/Worst
“...but what I really want to do is direct,” goes the hoary old Hollywood refrain. Actors, key grips, wardrobe assistants, the odd ambitious caterer -- sometimes it feels like everyone who’s ever stepped on to a movie set dreams, idly or with calculation, of one day calling the shots. Even the clapper loaders, who technically are the ones who call shots. But of all those jealously eyeing the director’s megaphone (metaphorical sadly, they seem to have gone the way of the plus-four as part of the director’s standard kit) perhaps those with the most reason to be covetous are the screenwriters, the hardy souls who turn in 120-page draft after draft, only to have their baby wrested from their grasp and dressed up, maybe brilliantly but often not, in clothes they might not have chosen themselves.

There's rumors and then there's James Bond rumors, and lately they've been even more frenzied than usual. Mostly that's down to the news that "informal talks" have taken place between Christopher Nolan and producers to helm an upcoming entry in the franchise, and today brings more speculation from a couple different sources.

After pretty much destroying the box office this past weekend, and on track to take home a cool $1 billion dollars, "Iron Man 3" is a triumphant return for writer/director Shane Black. And the filmmaker at this point could likely get any meeting in town he wanted to, and will probably get scripts piled up at his door. But having been through the hype cycle one in Hollywood already (detailed in our feature 5 Scripts That Made Shane Black Hollywood's Hottest Writer In The 1990s), he's sticking to project he's been attached to forever.

Iron Man 3, end credits
By now, you're likely part of the group of everyone on the planet who went to see "Iron Man 3" last weekend. And while we broke down what we liked, and what we didn't about the third installment in our "Iron Man 3" feature yesterday, the bottom line us that, for the most part, we really enjoyed the movie. But these closing credits and are a pretty good reminder of just how messy Marvel movies in general can be.

Best/worst Iron Man 3 feature
If you were in prison, comatose or pinned to the ground by a fallen armoire this weekend, it's possible you didn't see "Iron Man 3." All the rest of us, it seems, ignored our mothers' protestations and spent a couple of hours of this fine sunny summer weekend indoors in the dark, watching Robert Downey Jr. suit up as Tony Stark/Iron Man for his third solo outing. In fact, judging by these numbers, so did Mom. The "Iron Man" threequel (read about some others here) is already in the history books as the second biggest domestic opening of all time, right behind sister film "The Avengers," and looks on track to be another billion-dollar movie for the unprecedentedly successful Marvel Universe project. But with Shane Black a new recruit for the director's chair (Iron Throne?) and expectations vertiginously high for the launch of Phase Two, the finished film could be expected to show at least a few stretch marks. Our early review is here and since then, many of The Playlist have managed to catch up with it, so here's what we thought worked and what did not. **Spoilers abound.**

“Iron Man 3” has already amassed more than $300 million worldwide and is on target to become the highest grossing opening weekend in the United States ever (outdoing even last summer’s “The Avengers”). This is quite a coup for director/co-writer Shane Black, who, back in the '90s, during a kind of spec script arms race, was frequently topping himself as the most paid screenwriter of all time, alongside guys like Joe Eszterhas (Black recently told Vanity Fair, in a terrific piece about spec scripts, “Eszterhas used to call and wake me up at night saying, ‘I just sold something for more money than you, ha-ha’”).

Earlier this spring it was revealed that China would get a special cut of Disney's "Iron Man 3," with additional footage from the Beijing shoot and a special cameo appearance by Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing. This isn't unheard of (a similar situation happened with last year's "Looper") but it is sort of amazing for a movie of this size and scale to be readjusted for an international audience (even one as vast and powerful as China). As Slashfilm points out, co-writer and director Shane Black recently acknowledged that there might be a little something extra in that version. He also commented on what his next, post-"Iron Man 3" project will be (hint: he's been attached to it for roughly one billion years).

After just about as successful a start as you could ask for (three new franchises, and one mega-franchise that kicked off with the third biggest movie of all time), the Marvel movie machine is moving into its next phase. And with it comes the risk of dilution; we're getting at least two movies a year (plus TV series "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D"), and with countless other superheroes also in the marketplace, there's a chance that diminishing returns could set in; what was once a special chance to see much-loved characters on the big screen might simply become a bi-annual check in to see much of what we've seen before.
