Best/worst Iron Man 3 feature
If you were in prison, comatose or pinned to the ground by a fallen armoire this weekend, it's possible you didn't see "Iron Man 3." All the rest of us, it seems, ignored our mothers' protestations and spent a couple of hours of this fine sunny summer weekend indoors in the dark, watching Robert Downey Jr. suit up as Tony Stark/Iron Man for his third solo outing. In fact, judging by these numbers, so did Mom. The "Iron Man" threequel (read about some others here) is already in the history books as the second biggest domestic opening of all time, right behind sister film "The Avengers," and looks on track to be another billion-dollar movie for the unprecedentedly successful Marvel Universe project. But with Shane Black a new recruit for the director's chair (Iron Throne?) and expectations vertiginously high for the launch of Phase Two, the finished film could be expected to show at least a few stretch marks. Our early review is here and since then, many of The Playlist have managed to catch up with it, so here's what we thought worked and what did not. **Spoilers abound.**

“Iron Man 3” has already amassed more than $300 million worldwide and is on target to become the highest grossing opening weekend in the United States ever (outdoing even last summer’s “The Avengers”). This is quite a coup for director/co-writer Shane Black, who, back in the '90s, during a kind of spec script arms race, was frequently topping himself as the most paid screenwriter of all time, alongside guys like Joe Eszterhas (Black recently told Vanity Fair, in a terrific piece about spec scripts, “Eszterhas used to call and wake me up at night saying, ‘I just sold something for more money than you, ha-ha’”).

Earlier this spring it was revealed that China would get a special cut of Disney's "Iron Man 3," with additional footage from the Beijing shoot and a special cameo appearance by Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing. This isn't unheard of (a similar situation happened with last year's "Looper") but it is sort of amazing for a movie of this size and scale to be readjusted for an international audience (even one as vast and powerful as China). As Slashfilm points out, co-writer and director Shane Black recently acknowledged that there might be a little something extra in that version. He also commented on what his next, post-"Iron Man 3" project will be (hint: he's been attached to it for roughly one billion years).

Review: 'Iron Man 3' Is A Solid, Sometimes Surprising Start To Marvel's Phase Two Movies

After just about as successful a start as you could ask for (three new franchises, and one mega-franchise that kicked off with the third biggest movie of all time), the Marvel movie machine is moving into its next phase. And with it comes the risk of dilution; we're getting at least two movies a year (plus TV series "Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D"), and with countless other superheroes also in the marketplace, there's a chance that diminishing returns could set in; what was once a special chance to see much-loved characters on the big screen might simply become a bi-annual check in to see much of what we've seen before.

Watch the new "Iron Man 3" trailer
After counting it down for the past few days, Marvel has finally lifted the curtain on the new trailer for "Iron Man 3," so strap in and get ready for the ride. And you know what? You probably won't be shocked to learn that this likely won't be Robert Downey Jr.'s or Tony Stark's last ride at the superhero rodeo.

So you spend millions and million of dollars on a Super Bowl spot, only to have every other rival studio drop their ads right at the same time. Smart marketing? We'll let the accountants sort it out, but Marvel is hoping to transform jocks into nerds with this Super Bowl spot.

Shane Black Says 'Iron Man 3' Will Be A "Techno-Thriller" Plus Japanese Trailer Shows Off A Bit More Footage

We’ve already been informed that “Iron Man 3” will most certainly not be a serious movie despite a rather serious looking trailer, so it looks like we should get ready for a totally not serious “techno-thriller” next summer. That’s Shane Black's latest description of the third "Iron Man" installment, but that description was also preceded by the words “gritty” and intense,” so at this point it doesn’t sound like even Shane Black’s sure just how frivolous or serious this thing's going to be.

The trailer for Disney/Marvel's "Iron Man 3" debuts in mere days (Tuesday, October 23), which means, of course, something has to hit first, and that something is a teaser trailer, or perhaps more accurately, a 17-second trailer for the trailer. It doesn't reveal much, though it does show Pepper Potts in pain, potentially being tortured, which we suppose means she's finally part of the storyline in a more significant way. It also shows Tony Stark's latest Iron Man armor (mark 7? It's hard to keep up). The "Iron Man 3" synopsis was released late last week and it's as vague as humanly possible: Tony Stark is challenged, has to face secrets that have haunted him all along, blah, blah, etc. etc. Here it is if you're curious.

Marvel Studios, and in particular the “Iron Man” franchise, have a long and storied history with Comic-Con and Hall H. Nearly all of their films have had a presence at the show, oftentimes debuting footage shot only days before the convention. “Captain America” famously debuted an impressively polished reel two years ago after only one week of shooting.

On June 12th, 1987, audiences around the country got their first look at that (to borrow one of the more quotable bits from the movie) ugly motherfucker that is "Predator." It heralded a number of promising new stars – most notably Arnold Schwarzenegger finally getting a bona fide blockbuster after sleeper hits like "The Terminator" and "Conan The Barbarian" – and director John McTiernan would emerge as one of the freshest, most stylish voices in action filmmaking since John Ford.
