“That’s going straight in the scrapbook” says director Shane Meadows early on in his music documentary “The Stone Roses: Made of Stone” which played at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival today, having already opened in early June in the U.K. and Ireland. He’s referring to a scribbled note left to him by one of the band members about something incidental, and his endearing awe at having this personalized piece of the One True Cross in his hands is indicative of his approach to the material overall -- sometimes for the charming better but occasionally for the enervating worse. Here Meadows is fan first and director second, and while the film will no doubt satisfy and engage even dormant Stone Roses fans, those coming to it expecting a little more of Meadows’ distinctive authorial imprint, or, really anything beyond a standard and rather conventional rise-and-fall-and-rise-again narrative may be disappointed.

The 1990s nostalgia train continues. While everyone who has snapped up tickets for Pavement, The Pixies, Blur, Soundgarden, The Jesus Lizard and countless others would have scoffed at such a proposition during their college years, there is some decent money to be had in coming back and playing for your fans who are now Dads with bigger wallets and more disposable cash to spend on reliving their late teens/early twenties. As long as it's over by 11 PM. (And don't let us get started on the trend of bands doing concerts of centered around playing albums front to back). Anyway, long story short, The Stone Roses are now back together, eager to make some retirement coin by embarking on a world tour starting next summer and recording a new album that will probably suck balls.

It feels like a long time since we had a major film from Shane Meadows. It's not that the director hasn't been busy, it's just that his work's either been somewhat slight -- the lovely, but lightweight "Somers Town," and the low-fi mockumentary "Le Donk and Scor-Zay-Zee" -- or on television, like last year's four-part "This Is England '86." That series, which picked up a BAFTA for actress Vicky McClure on Sunday, has a follow-up currently in production, "This Is England '88," but it also looks like Meadows is finally making a return to some bigger-scale cinematic work.

Primarily known on this side of the ocean for his bracing coming-of-age skinhead tale "This Is England" (which was recently followed up with the TV series "This Is England '86") director Shane Meadows is showing a much softer, gentler side to himself in a new juice ad (seriously) for Brit brand Robinsons.
