Step into my limousine and let’s drive around in the dead of night trying to find the corpses of 2012’s best films, shall we? Our journey will take us to the cornfields of Kansas, to tiny New England islands and to an explosion in a restaurant in Tel Aviv. We will talk to murderers and movie directors, we will celebrate friendship in Barcelona and suffer despair in the Phillippine jungle; we will get punched in the supermarket and mourn Phil Coulson. And then, just as we are sipping Fernet Branca in an Italian café, mercifully the apocalypse will arrive from below and that will be that.

For cinephiles at least, one of the most anticipated releases of the summer is the Keanu Reeves-produced documentary “Side By Side,” not only for its essential film vs. digital debate, but even more for the incredible behind-the-scenes talent lined up for interviews. Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, and Christopher Nolan all make appearances in the film, and now Tribeca Films have released the latest in their series of outtakes, this time featuring the inimitable director of “Avatar” and “Titanic.”

As filmmakers, financiers and studios continue to work together to bring movies to the multiplex, one of the more interesting discussions taking place that affects everything from budgets and scheduling to artistic approach and visual aesthetic is the decision whether or not to shoot digitally or on film. And getting right into the debate is Keanu Reeves, with his documentary "Side By Side."

The ongoing debate concerning digital vs. film isn't just about which format is preferred. The decision about which method to use depends on a variety of other factors including budgets, the size of the production, how the movie will be shot and so much more. And all of those issues are explored in the Keanu Reeves-produced documentary "Side By Side," a fascinating look at what is becoming one of the most important technological turning points that cinema has faced in quite some time.

There are people, we're told, who just rock up to the theater on Friday night and see whatever is coming on next. We have never been those people. We scan the release calendar weeks, even months in advance, in order to check out what's coming to theaters, so we know what we're queueing up for, and when we'll be seeing it.

Doing an impressive job of tracing the evolution of filmmaking technology (not just the cameras but the editing, post-production, distribution, exhibition, even the archiving aspects of it) from 1895 to the present day, “Side by Side” is an old school talking-head documentary on the subject of digital filmmaking vs. photochemical filmmaking. It sounds pretty dull as a logline, but stacked with gossipy, informal anecdotes and opinions from many of the most respected directors, cinematographers, editors, execs, VFX artists and digital wizards in the industry, it proves instead to be highly entertaining and informative, and by its close has presented a thoroughly diverting overview of the debate. Then again, we are massive geeks about this sort of thing.

With the death knell ringing for 35mm film as format -- with estimates suggesting that by 2015 it will be nothing more than a niche -- there is perhaps no better time for the Keanu Reeves-produced documentary "Side By Side." Set to premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival next month, a trailer has arrived and it should spur some very interesting conversations.
