When it was announced last month that Martin Scorsese's long-developing dream project "Silence" was finally getting made, with a shoot next year in the works, we tempered our excitement. We had heard this before, more than once, and for a variety of reasons, the movie never happened. But today comes some great news, as not only is it moving forward, but the film has found it's first actor.

Finally? Could it actually really be real this time? Martin Scorsese's long developing dream project "Silence" has taken forever to come to fruition, seemingly annually promised, with out much happening. Last spring the movie got backing from Cecchi Gori Pictures with promises it would be the first thing they produced, but then Scorsese went and made "The Wolf Of Wall Street" and lawsuits flew back and forth between the company and the filmmaker. And then once again in January it was said "Silence" would be next, and it actually seems like it's true this time.

The last time Martin Scorsese promised his long developing, dream project "Silence" was "next," was after he had wrapped on "Hugo." But as always, something else came first, and this time it was his upcoming "The Wolf Of Wall Street," which started shooting last summer and only wrapped earlier this week. But as you might recall, over the summer Scorsese was sued by Cecchi Gori Pictures, the production company who have been backing development, as they were more or less finally fed up of seeing Scorsese do everything but make "Silence." And perhaps because of that little legal battle, the director is finally promising to make it next.

Martin Scorsese is one of cinema's most prolific directors, but it's the film he isn't making that's getting him into trouble. Cecchi Gori Pictures, the production company headed by Vittorio Cecchi Gori, has filed a lawsuit against Scorsese for not making his dream project "Silence," which the director has been trying to get mounted for the past two decades.

A little extra patience is all it takes, it seems. After the financial disappointment of “Hugo” reportedly divided Martin Scorsese and his producer Graham King, halting plans to bring his dream project “Silence” to the screen, we wondered whether the venture would ever recover given its long gestation, but it seems the European company responsible for “Il Postino” and “Life is Beautiful” has been waiting in the wings the entire time.

While the critical adulation -- eleven Oscar nominations and five wins -- for Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" put a nice finish on the film's journey to the big screen, in the cold light of day, and on a financial level, the film was a bust. While it didn't get the same kind of ink that something like "Men In Black 3" did, production on "Hugo" was rocky, with Scorsese struggling to adjust to 3D during the filming, forcing the production schedule that was loosely slated from July to November 2010 to get extended to February 2011. At when it was all tallied up, the final price tag of the movie was apparently somewhere in the neighborhood of $180 million, and with the film only taking in $182 million worldwide it was likely not the hit backers GK Films was looking for. And according to THR, this has put a strain on the relationship between producer Graham King and filmmaker Martin Scorsese, potentially putting the director's long-gestating dream project "Silence" in jeopardy.

Re-confirming what we reported back in February 2011, Martin Scorsese caught up with Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo on BBC 5 in December and once again posited that his Jesuit priest drama “Silence” will be his next film. “I’m hoping to do [Shusaku] Endo’s book next, ‘Silence,’” Scorsese began before correcting himself. “I’m not hoping, we’re literally pulling all of the elements together at this point.”

Despite James Cameron's best intentions, for the most part, the 3D format has primarly been utilized as a cash grab by studios looking to pad out the bottom line in an era when box office receipts appear to be on the decline. However, 2011 marked a bit of a change. At the arthouse, Werner Herzog and Wim Wenders embraced 3D for their unique documentaries "Cave Of Forgotten Dreams" and "Pina" while Martin Scorsese brought true artistry to the format with "Hugo." One of the director's most visually dazzling efforts of his career, "Hugo" found Scorsese delivering a truly immersive 3D world, one that engaged the viewer without the need to make sure stuff is constantly flying at their face. And he may not yet be done working in three dimensions.

'Silence' Will Shoot Next, Followed By 'The Wolf Of Wall Street'It seems there is a small flurry of activity regarding a few brewing Martin Scorsese projects recently. This morning we reported that Robert De Niro revealed that "The Irishman" was still very much on the docket, though not a certainty just yet, and recently, the director's publicist told us that he was fully committed to shooting his long-gestating passion project "Silence" next (more on this in a second). But yet another project is now gained a little more traction.

We just got off the e-horn with Martin Scorsese's publicist. While Vulture is partly correct that Scorsese is once again attached to "The Wolf of Wall Street" with Leonardo DiCaprio, the New York blog only has half the picture down. That drama about the rise and fall of Wall Street stockbroker Jordan Belfort is not next, nor is it shooting this summer.
