There's no real joy in reporting on a massive bomb. Mostly because, why hate? Usually the participants involved will cry into piles of hundred dollar bills why you return to your menial workday job, gloating seems like a waste of energy. It's especially disconcerting when it comes from someone like Andrew Stanton, who previously directed "Wall-E" and was making his transition to live-action with the uber-expensive "John Carter." Analysts have been predicting doom for a long time now, in a way fueling the negative buzz with their irresponsible reporting, leading to a soft opening only slightly surpasses similar boys-n-sand actioner "Prince Of Persia," and that's mostly due to 3D prices.

TGIF betches! I set off for the magical land of queso and breakfast tacos tonight-- yep! Going to Austin for SXSW. But not without a little Friday In Theaters to set you off right. It just wouldn't be right to depart without a mild rant about the "John Carter" marketing campaign! Yes, this weekend the questionable Civil War/Sci-Fi "John Carter" muscles its way into theaters, as well as Elizabeth Olsen spooky movie "Silent House," and funny attractive people with problems rom-com "Friends with Kids."

Review: 'Silent House' Manages Some Surrealistic Thrills Inside Some Rigid Technical Restraints

"Silent House" has a nifty hook – it's being billed as a "real time" (probably not) horror movie filled in a single, unified shot (again: there are eight separate shots, but that's still pretty impressive). In a way it's a stylish extension of the current found footage craze, as we're locked into a single character (played, with believable intensity, by Elizabeth Olsen) as she scurries around a dilapidated lake house, but it also allows for far more flowery filmmaking (particularly in the film's freaky final act). What makes "Silent House" such an exceptional little genre treat is that, locked into a very rigid technical framework, filmmakers Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, have gone out of their way to make a genuinely scary, occasionally surreal, intensely imaginative thriller. What could have simply been an exercise ends up being truly engaging.

Back in January 2011, Elizabeth Olsen came out of nowhere at the Sundance Film Festival, earning rave reviews for her performance in "Martha Marcy May Marlene" and riding a huge wave of buzz all year culminating in awards season attention and a Spirit Awards nomination. However, the actress starred in another movie at Park City at the same time, one that drew less notice -- the single take horror film "Silent House." And wisely, the team behind that decided to wait until the post-'Marcy' buzz before releasing it into theaters.

While the awards season race hasn't quite built up around "Martha Marcy May Marlene" the way many predicted, the key role in that film was played wonderfully by Elizabeth Olsen, has the been the subject of much praise from critics and audiences alike, and marked a helluva breakout feature for the the actress. Olsen may not quite have caught on in the way other breakthrough actresses like Jessica Chastain have this year, but her name is still a popular one around Hollywood, and not just because she’s the kid sister of the “Full House” wonder twins.
