Foxcatcher
Cannes you believe it? (Sorry, we're already tired from being up early to cover this.) Thierry Fremaux and co. unveiled the slate for this years Cannes Film Festival (with a couple more titles to come), and yes, that means more images from the films in competition.

A Thousand Times Good Night
When revered Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami cancelled his attendance at the Marrakech Film Festival due to ill health, the organizers could have had a further problem on their hands as he was meant, in addition to giving a masterclass, to be handing out the award at one of the “Hommages”—the tributes given to a filmmaker or actor in recognition of their body of work. However, that one headache didn’t occur here because the recipient was Juliette Binoche, practically the busiest actress on the planet, and Bruno Dumont, her director in this year’s “Camille Claudel” and himself the subject of a Marrakech masterclass, stepped into the breach instead. It’s a mark of just how constantly she is shooting, and with what calibre of filmmaker, that, throw a stone at a festival like this, and you’ll hit two or three people who have worked with Binoche, and probably recently.

Things have been a bit quiet for Kristen Stewart after a pretty loud 2012. Of course the "Twilight" saga came to an end, "On The Road" hit the festival circuit, was sorta released in December and then sorta re-released again this past spring and then there was messy situation surrounding "Snow White And The Huntsman" and tabloid-fueled scandal regarding her dalliance with Rupert Sanders. All of this goes to say there are good reasons for her to have kept a low profile. While 2013 has seen her exit a couple projects -- Warner Bros. con-man rom-com "Focus" and "Lay Down In Darkness" (which Scott Cooper asserts she was never really attached to) -- now she's ramping up for two new movies.

Yeah, yeah we know. IFC Films just picked up Olivier Assayas' "Sils Maria," even though it hasn't shot a single frame, but perhaps they saw this casting coming and realized this is something they wanted to get their hands on.

In a confident gesture, IFC has picked up the distribution rights to the as-yet-unproduced “Sils Maria” (aka "Since Maria") the Switzerland-set project from French auteur Oliver Assayas to star Juliette Binoche and Mia Wasikowska. IFC acted as a distributor on Assayas’ “Summer Hours,” and will bring his latest “Something in the Air” to theaters this year. It appears that they have as much hope for this forthcoming contemplative tale as we do, particularly given the pedigree of his cast.

That Mia Wasikowska is everywhere. The elfin darling of the indie elite (who has been known to slum it for the odd blockbuster, like breakthrough "Alice in Wonderland"), she has sustained the critical momentum of the pajama-clad daughter in “The Kids Are All Right” to dominate the Sundance acting conversation with “Stoker." This summer, according to Ion Cinema, she will be trekking into “Sound of Music” country to film an Alpine meditation with Euro-stalwart Juliette Binoche.

Unspooling his semi-autobiographical, revolutionary coming-of-age tale "Something In The Air" at the New York Film Festival this month (you can read our review here), French filmmaker Olivier Assayas isn't letting the press rounds sap all of his energy. While he hadn't officially announced his next project, the former Cahiers du cinéma critic told The Playlist in an exclusive interview that he plans to reteam with Juliette Binoche for the tentatively titled "Since Maria" which he's expected to shoot next spring.
