Though the development process wound up stretching across a couple of years, with a few actors coming and going along the way, it's hard to argue with the impressive lineup David M. Rosenthal ("Janie Jones") assembled for "A Single Shot": Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, William H. Macy, Melissa Leo, Kelly Reilly ("Flight," "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows") and Ophelia Lovibond ("No Strings Attached," "London Boulevard"). Not too shabby at all. And while it was one of our most anticipated movies of the Berin International Film Festival, the end result didn't exactly win us over, but you'll soon be able to judge for yourself.

Berlin Review: 'A Single Shot' With Sam Rockwell Unravels From A Tight Premise Into A Downbeat, Messy Misfire

The main narrative surrounding the evolution of David M. Rosenthal’s “A Single Shot,” which premieres at the Berlin Film Festival today, has been about the longer-than-usual casting merry-go-round -- since 2009 a roster of talent as long as your arm has signed up then signed out of the film. However the fear that, as the accepted wisdom goes, there must be something fundamentally wrong with a project that takes this long to put together was somewhat mitigated by the kind of names who kept on stepping up: as worrying as it might be to lose the likes of (pre-breakout) Michael Fassbender, Alessandro Nivola, Forest Whitaker or Juliette Lewis, it doesn’t sting so hard when you get Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright and Jason Isaacs to show up instead -- all actors we admire.

We're still brushing the snow off our metaphorical evening wear from the Sundance Film Festival, which feels like it ended only yesterday, and yet tomorrow sees the second stop of The Playlist's 2013 festival roadshow get underway, with the opening night of the Berlin Film Festival. The earliest in the year of the Big Three European festivals (alongside Cannes and Venice), the Berlinale, founded in the German capital in 1951, is traditionally one of the most prestigious events in the movie calendar.

Here's the thing about film festival season. While it brings with it numerous high-profile titles that bloggers and movie fans have been following since day one, there is also a handful of strong movies we simply forgot about. Case in point: "A Single Shot." The long-developing picture firmed up its cast last spring, and went in front of cameras, and it promptly faded to the back of our minds. But today it was announced by the Berlin International Flim Festival as part of their Forum section, where it will be making its World Premiere. And a whole host of images for the movie have cropped up to give us a first peek.

It's been a long, strange trip for "A Single Shot." Seemingly stuck in development hell, the project had an array of names circling over the past couple of years -- Michael Fassbender, Alessandro Nivola, Emily Mortimer, Terrence Howard, Juliette Lewis, James Badge Dale, Juno Temple, Leslie Mann, Thomas Haden Church -- but began finally firming things up this week. Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs and William H. Macy (who has been attached through various incarnations) were confirmed, and now we know the rest of the folks joining them.

If "A Single Shot" sounds vaguely familiar, it's because it has been on our radar under various guises for some time now. A number of cast members have joined and left the project over the past couple of years, but David M. Rosenthal's film has now made it in front of cameras with Sam Rockwell and William H. Macy (who has stuck with the pic through various incarnations) taking lead roles.

It really goes to show how far Michael Fassbender has come in this town. A little under a year ago, the actor signed on to star in a David Jacobson-directed adaptation of Matthew F. Jones' thriller "A Single Shot." But since then, Fassbender has dropped the adaptation in favor of collaborations with the likes of Steven Soderbergh, David Cronenberg, Matthew Vaughn, Steve McQueen and soon, Ridley Scott -- and who can blame him?

Juliette Lewis was only seen in a couple of poorly received films last year -- "The Switch" and "Conviction" -- but here's the thing: she was the best part about either film. As the hippy dippy friend in the former and the key white trash witness in the latter, Lewis was alive and engaging in a way the rest of the film around her wasn't (and yes, she did a brief cameo in "Due Date" as well). Moving into this year, the actress is lining up a couple more films that will hopefully fire on all cylinders.
