The main narrative surrounding the evolution of David M. Rosenthal’s “A Single Shot” has been about the longer-than-usual casting merry-go-round -- since 2009, a roster of talent as long as your arm has signed up then signed out of the film. However the fear that, as the accepted wisdom goes, there must be something fundamentally wrong with a project that takes this long to put together was somewhat mitigated by the kind of names who kept on stepping up: as worrying as it might be to lose the likes of (pre-breakout) Michael Fassbender, Alessandro Nivola, Forest Whitaker or Juliette Lewis, it doesn’t sting so hard when you get Sam Rockwell, William H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright and Jason Isaacs to show up instead -- all actors we admire. Except in this case, accepted wisdom should again be accepted: “A Single Shot” does not add up to anywhere near the sum of its parts, and as individually impressive as any of those parts might be (Rockwell), we are left with a film that if not quite a Frankenstein’s monster, is certainly patchworky.

Sam Rockwell is one of those actors whose mere presence in a movie can elicit excitement for a project that could have otherwise easily been written off. No matter what he's in – if it's big budget nonsense like "Charlie's Angels" or something like Duncan Jones' moody, micro-budget "Moon" – Rockwell is sure to turn in a performance that's downright electric (or electrified, maybe). His newest film is "A Single Shot," which opens this weekend (read our review). A twisty, turny film noir about a down-on-his-luck hunter who makes a fatally wrong shot, killing a young woman in the woods, Rockwell is as intense as he usually is goofy, his manic energy turned inward, for a kind of bottled fury. It's quite a performance, especially considering the fine actors he's surrounded by (William H. Macy, Jeffrey Wright and Jason Isaacs are among his costars).

Hello, streamers! Our picks for this week should prove to be nostalgic and contemporary, reflective and forward thinking, a look to the inspirational works of the past with a glance at what they've rendered since. Two films debuting in theaters are also new to VOD, while the release of Destin Cretton's much hailed "Short Term 12" encouraged us to take a look at his last feature. And with the opening of Wong Kar-wai's tenth feature film this weekend, we decided to feature the Chinese director quite prominently: some works—"Happy Together," "In the Mood for Love," and "Chungking Express"—are already well known, so we're offering a curated assortment from his early days of writing and directing that you may be a little less familiar with. The Criterion Collection's special presentation of remastered films (care of Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation) on Hulu deserves similar attention, and we have an overview of two of our favorites from that group. Bet you can't wait to find out what they are! Let's get going.

A Single Shot Sam Rockwell
A hunting accident that leaves a young woman dead and the discovery of a box of cash. What could possibly go wrong? As you might expect, a lot, if that simple premise sets off a chain of events in the upcoming thriller "A Single Shot."

Though the development process wound up stretching across a couple of years, with a few actors coming and going along the way, it's hard to argue with the impressive lineup David M. Rosenthal ("Janie Jones") assembled for "A Single Shot": Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, William H. Macy, Melissa Leo, Kelly Reilly ("Flight," "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows") and Ophelia Lovibond ("No Strings Attached," "London Boulevard"). Not too shabby at all. And while it was one of our most anticipated movies of the Berin International Film Festival, the end result didn't exactly win us over, but you'll soon be able to judge for yourself.

We're still brushing the snow off our metaphorical evening wear from the Sundance Film Festival, which feels like it ended only yesterday, and yet tomorrow sees the second stop of The Playlist's 2013 festival roadshow get underway, with the opening night of the Berlin Film Festival. The earliest in the year of the Big Three European festivals (alongside Cannes and Venice), the Berlinale, founded in the German capital in 1951, is traditionally one of the most prestigious events in the movie calendar.

Here's the thing about film festival season. While it brings with it numerous high-profile titles that bloggers and movie fans have been following since day one, there is also a handful of strong movies we simply forgot about. Case in point: "A Single Shot." The long-developing picture firmed up its cast last spring, and went in front of cameras, and it promptly faded to the back of our minds. But today it was announced by the Berlin International Flim Festival as part of their Forum section, where it will be making its World Premiere. And a whole host of images for the movie have cropped up to give us a first peek.

It's been a long, strange trip for "A Single Shot." Seemingly stuck in development hell, the project had an array of names circling over the past couple of years -- Michael Fassbender, Alessandro Nivola, Emily Mortimer, Terrence Howard, Juliette Lewis, James Badge Dale, Juno Temple, Leslie Mann, Thomas Haden Church -- but began finally firming things up this week. Sam Rockwell, Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs and William H. Macy (who has been attached through various incarnations) were confirmed, and now we know the rest of the folks joining them.
