You gotta hand it to producer Jason Blum; he knows how to spend a little and make a lot. Between the "Paranormal Activity" franchise, "Insidious" and "Sinister," he's proven he can take a million bucks or so and make that back dozens of times over. And while the found footage movie is now a bonafide franchise, the latter two films are going down that path too. "Insidious 2" arrives later this year and now "Sinister" will be coming to freak you out all over again.

Despite a recent lull in box-office activity, the last two weeks feel distinctly like summer sessions, with “Taken 2” pulling in blockbuster numbers at the top spot. Though critical reception was harsh, the picture seems as if it will lose only slightly more than half its audience in its second frame, when most figured it would lose a significant percentage from that opening weekend.

After a summer in which horror offerings like “The Possession” and “The Apparition” limped into theaters before lackluster reviews, the Robert Cargill-penned indie “Sinister” has slowly but surely emerged as one of this fall's most interesting releases, and now there are three new clips to cement that perception further.

We have to admit, the premise of "Sinister" kind of put us off from the start. The story centers on a novelist who moves into a home where a family was recently murdered and discovers home video footage that might reveal exactly what happened to them. Toss in director Scott Derrickson ("The Exorcism Of Emily Rose," "The Day The Earth Stood Still") and a not so inspiring cast led by Ethan Hawke and....yawn, right? Well, guess again.

In October, Lionsgate will release Scott Derickson's low-budget shocker, "Sinister," a super fun and occasionally very scary horror film starring Ethan Hawke as a true crime author desperate to recapture the fame he experienced as a young writer. So desperate, in fact, that he moves his entire family into a house where a savage murder spree recently took place, where a family, much like his own, was brutally killed. From there things get considerably spookier, with Hawke uncovering a malevolent evil lurking in a series of film canisters in the house's attic. Today we get to exclusively debut a pair of spooky new stills from the movie, ones that might just haunt your dreams.

Ethan Hawke sure is loving genre films lately. Outside of working on almost anything directors Richard Linklater and Antoine Fuqua do, Hawke somehow stumbled into 2005's ill-advised remake of "Assault on Precinct 13" and 2010's vampires-curing-vampirism movie "Daybreakers," and has finally made his first straight horror film (outside of 1998's "The Newton Boys" - ZING!) with the upcoming "Sinister." That's not the most impressive run in genre films ever recorded, but considering Hawke has spent most of his career doing arthouse fare since debuting in Joe Dante's "Explorers," we're considering it a trend.

As a horror movie that’s incredibly effective and yet evaporates pretty quickly once it’s over, Scott Derrickson’s “Sinister” defines the difference between "scary" and "haunting." Truthfully it’s a balance of a lot of things – ghost story versus murder mystery, found-footage “realism” versus pure fiction, theatricality versus raw emotion – but it exemplifies an era in which audiences, much less filmmakers, no longer distinguish between suspense and terror, which is why their payoffs work twice as brilliantly but linger half as long. Overproduced but occasionally deeply powerful, “Sinister” is a satisfying old-school thrill ride whose muscle eventually overpowers its brain.

Seth Rogen is a fairly unlikely movie star all in all, but a fully flung movie star he is, and one who's gone from being the wacky scene-stealing sidekick to a bona-fide Hollywood insider, as demonstrated by his hosting role at the Spirit Awards over the weekend (and delivering a great monologue as well). He's also made smart choices: producing and co-starring in comedy-drama "50/50," moving into more serious fare with "Take This Waltz" and keeping busy with regular animation voice work alongside his more traditional starring roles.
