Review: 'Snow White & the Huntsman' Is A Beautiful Slog

2012 has already delivered one big-budget movie based on the classic Grimm Brothers' fairy tale "Snow White." Earlier this spring arrived Tarsem's fizzy, Bollywood-ish "Mirror Mirror," which saw Julia Roberts vamping it up as the evil queen, surrounded by the most cheesily phony-looking sets this side of a Hammer horror movie -- if the movie had been any lighter it would have blown off the screen. And this week lands another: "Snow White & the Huntsman," an oppressively grim (pun very much intended) take on the fairy tale that instead favors mood, menace, and a kind of earthy grittiness, over the airier "Mirror Mirror." The problem is, that for all its frequently jaw-dropping visual panache, in narrative terms it sputters and stalls, sagging under the weight of its visual opulence.

One of the big reasons that moviegoers -- all boosted by the film's killer trailers -- will be turning out in droves this weekend to see Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman" this Friday are the stars, with the picture stocked with of-the-moment hotness. Its three leads are "Twilight" franchise star Kristen Stewart as the fairest in the land, Snow White; Chris Hemsworth, currently smashing the box office records to smithereens as Thor in Joss Whedon's superhero free-for-all "The Avengers" as the titular huntsman; and Charlize Theron, as the vainglorious evil queen Ravenna (and she's appearing in Ridley Scott's sci-fi spectacle "Prometheus" opening next week).

Once upon a time, you could just release a trailer and people were happy with it: a rare glimpse into a movie that was still weeks or months off. Nowadays, you can't just have one trailer, you have to several, some before the movie's even been made, plus endless TV spots and featurettes and clips and whatnot.

Is it that soon? Believe it or not, "Snow White & The Hunstman" hits theaters in just a few weeks, which means the final marketing push will be happening to get moviegoers to buy a ticket, and Universal is hoping Florence + The Machine fans will be among those lining up for the fairy tale flick.

There was a time when Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman" and Relativity Media's "Mirror, Mirror" were tied to the hip, particularly as they lobbied for release dates, with "Mirror, Mirror" winning the earliest release date of them all. That "victory" led "Mirror, Mirror" director Tarsem Singh to tell EW last June that "fortunately or unfortunately, there really, truly is only room for the first one of these." Well, "Mirror, Mirror" has come and gone, leaving middling success and mostly abysmal reviews in its wake (we found it "remarkably forgettable"), while "Snow White and the Huntsman" is being viewed as a potential franchise, with Universal looking to lock up director Rupert Sanders for a potential sequel. Two new preview clips have arrived online for "Snow White and the Huntsman," which has been laying low during the "The Avengers" promotional blitz but have finally decided to step up their efforts considering the success of the two films shared star Chris Hemsworth.

It feels like the summer movie season has been underway for some time already, given that last month saw the arrival of huge blockbuster "The Hunger Games," as well as "21 Jump Street," an R-rated comedy that's taken an enormously impressive $130 million. And that's even without mentioning those that hoped to be big box office stuff, but fell at the first: "John Carter," already taking its place among the annals of the great flops, and "Wrath Of The Titans," which has taken less than half what its predecessor made domestically.

You've gotta assume this means Universal is predicting a fairytale ending. While the studio's upcoming summer tentpole, "Snow White and the Huntsman," didn't ever appear like it would lend itself to a sequel initially -- it is, afterall, somewhat of a self-contained Snow White story -- we heard a few weeks ago via Universal that chief Ron Meyer believes that the series could have a shelf-life past the first film if it were to center itself around the character of the Huntsman as played by Chris Hemsworth.

While "The Avengers" is going with all your favorite terrible bands from '90s on its lunk-headed soundtrack, at least the folks behind "Snow White And The Huntsman" are trying something a little bit different.

So, we already saw what Tarsem Singh did with the Snow White story in the family-oriented goof "Mirror Mirror," and now it's Rupert Sanders' turn. Grittier, darker and much more epic in scope, "Snow White And The Huntsman" might be one you'll want leave the little ones at home for. With the film ready to ride into movie theaters this summer, a batch of new images have arrived to prove this isn't your ordinary fairy tale.

Remember last fall when Ron Meyer, the president & COO of Universal Pictures, said, "We make a lot of shitty movies. Every one of them breaks my heart"? Well, in the timeliest of fashion, six months later, Meyer has attempted to clarify what he actually meant, which is that yes, sometimes Universal sometimes makes shitty movies (he last cited "The Wolfman," "Cowboys & Aliens" and "Land of the Lost"), however, adding, "we make some good movies and some shitty movies. Nobody ever sets out to make a shitty movie.”
