Rupert Sanders Is Ready To Lose His "Cinematic Virginity" To Snow White & Charlize Theron Says She's Basically Playing A Serial KillerComic-Con may be over but what we saw in San Diego is a strong indication that the box office will continue to take a beating from the superheroes, fairy tales and other high concept offerings over the next year or so. Despite all the talk about studios staying away this year, the convention was still a major circus and the films that did show up tried to grab some positive attention from the notoriously fickle crowd. As transparent as the marketing and pandering can get, especially during the panels where all cast and crew have been coached on exactly which topics to hit and which to avoid in order to stay on the good side of fanboys and girls, the whole thing still kind of works. This writer went into Saturday's panel for Universal's "Snow White & The Huntsman" with next to no interest in it and damn if it didn't end up winning him over, along with the rest of the packed crowd inside Hall H.

Yes, two Snow White movies are on the way in 2012 with Relativity getting out of the gate first with Tarsem Singh's (still) untitled and currently filming project and Universal following with "Snow White and the Huntsman." And while the source material may be the same, it looks like we're in for two very different films. We got our first look at Lily Collins in the former film just a few days ago and it was a spectacularly colorful, yet still prim, proper and pretty look at our titular hero. But it seems 'Huntsman' will be quite the opposite.

While Universal may have lost the release date battle against Relativity for their competing Snow White films, they may have very well won the war. Time will tell, but while Tarsem is currently very, very busy filming his movie and hoping to make it in time for its spring release, Universal has calmly cast up "Snow White and the Huntsman" and fuck, if we didn't care before, we're definitely on board now.

But Of Course: 'Snow White And The Huntsman' Is The First Of A Planned Trilogy

There are many arguments to be made that "Star Wars" ruined the movies, but one of the more persuasive is the way that it popularized the idea of the trilogy. George Lucas didn't invent the concept (that would have been the Ancient Greeks, thank you), but by making both the original films and the prequels, he popularized the concept, ensuring that almost any hit film would be intended as only the first part of three films, each one bigger than the last. And to a degree, it makes sense: it mirrors the three act structure that virtually every screenplay uses as a template, enabling a complete story with ups and downs to be told over a longer running time.

You gotta give it up to Universal. While their Snow White film will come in second to whatever Tarsem is currently cooking up, they've gone ahead with a batch of genius casting that vaults "Snow White And The Huntsman" right ahead of the competition. With Ian McShane, Eddie Izzard, Toby Jones, Bob Hoskins, Eddie Marsan and Stephen Graham all set to board, the Rupert Sanders film has gone ahead and found one more amazing Brit character actor which pretty much puts every one of our favorite Blighty thespians in one movie. Nice move.

Eddie Marsan & Stephen Graham Also On BoardIn the battle to make anyone care about either of the duelling "Snow White" projects in the works, Universal just landed the first punch. Relativity Media's "The Brothers Grimm: Snow White" (a title that seems to be in some degree of flux) might have "The Fall" director Tarsem at the helm, Julia Roberts as the queen and Armie Hammer as the prince, but its rival, "Snow White and the Huntsman," is amassing a diminutive supporting cast that's really made us sit up and take notice.

There are two ways through life, the way of nature and the way of grace. Or in Hollywood terms, there are two ways to release a movie: rushed on a tight schedule, or finely tuned with a more realistic production. The battle between Relativity and Universal over their respective Snow White films has been ugly, with the former trumping the latter by moving their Tarsem-directed film all the way up to a March 16, 2012 release date -- nine months from now and no, it hasn't started shooting yet. Universal's "Snow White And The Huntsman" is currently set just under a year away on June 1, 2012, with a comparably luxurious year to get it on screens. And it looks like they're going to use that time wisely.

Judd Apatow's 'Knocked Up' Spin-Off Now Set For December 21st, 2012 Every so often, Hollywood studios find themselves in a game of $300 million chicken, when two films with strikingly similar premises are green-lit simultaneously. And almost invariably, the first film out of the blocks ends up as the more successful: "Capote" landed a full year before the identically-plotted "Infamous," and despite a less starry cast walked away with more awards and a bigger haul, while "Dante's Peak" outgrossed the similarly lava-themed "Volcano" by over $50 million.
