Docs, docs, docs. That's what we're selling folks, so get 'em while they're still hot. An American mayor, Israeli intelligence agents, professional hockey players, and Dave Grohl lead the way on the documetary front. Alternately, you could tamper all that reality with a heavy dose of cinematic illusion and façade: aging hitmen, gun-toting Lolitas fighting the good fight for gender equality, and the walking undead, oh my! (And yes, by "façade," we do mean "Sly's perfectly and uncannily preserved face.") Which direction will you take this weekend? Or are you watching the Super Bowl with the rest of America? As months on the movie calendar go, February is one of the quieter ones. It doesn't have the Oscar leftovers, or sheer terribleness of January, meanwhile, the hopeful blockbusters of the spring and summer still seem far, far away. But that doesn't mean that there's nothing worth seeing.

Thank God for Dave Grohl. Everyone’s favorite Foo Fighter and the most cheerful member of Nirvana, his irrepressible energy and sheer delight in rocking the F out shines during his loving remembrance of the legendary Los Angeles recording studio Sound City in his debut documentary feature of the same name. Ostensibly a memorial to the studio that spawned such albums as Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers catalog, and Nirvana’s Nevermind, among many, many other classic rock albums, the film also celebrates the craft and collaboration borne of this kind of specific recording process.

We got a look a first look at the Dave Grohl directed documentary “Sound City” a couple of weeks ago with the trailer, and as intrigued as we were about the film we were doubly intrigued by its soundtrack – this is The Playlist after all. From what we’d seen so far it looked like Grohl was gathering a load of legendary musicians together to play live music in the eponymous California recording studio for the documentary, which would also make up the film’s original soundtrack. Well, it looks like that’s exactly the case, and the line-up for both the movie and soundtrack is extremely impressive.

Drummer, guitarist, singer, frontman…and now, documentarian. The Foo Fighters and Nirvana icon Dave Grohl is premiering his debut documentary feature “Sound City” at next year’s Sundance Flim Festival, and after securing a spot in the Documentary Premieres section at the festival, we’ve now got a trailer for the film.

While the history of musicians moving into movies -- whether acting, directing or otherwise -- has been dodgy to say the least, there are times when the artist and material syncs up perfectly and the transition makes sense. And such is the case with "Sound City," a new documentary produced and directed by Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana beatkeeper Dave Grohl.
