One of the many zillion projects Antoine Fuqua has been linked to in the past while is "Southpaw," a boxing flick once mooted as a vehicle for Eminem (he's since moved on to focus on his music). Last spring, the movie got put on the backburner by Sony and MGM, and then it pretty much fell off the radar. But now it's back to life at a new home.

We're not sure how or why a thoroughly average director like Antoine Fuqua can keep stacking up projects, but dude keeps stacking up the movies on his schedule, and good thing too since another one has fallen to the wayside for a moment.

The past year has seen the boxing movie get a little bit of a resurgence. Of course, there was David O. Russell's "The Fighter," which jumped late into the Oscar race last year and went on to nab statutes for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, and for the past two weeks, Hugh Jackman's robot boxing flick "Real Steel" has stayed stead on top of the box office. Now, fresh-out-of-bankruptcy MGM are looking to get going on a project that does not have a hobbit or James Bond in it, picking up the rights to "Southpaw," which will have Sony distributing the film.

Pugilist or pugilist-related movies are kind of having a moment right now. "The Fighter" fought its way to a strong box office haul and awards season recognition, and advance word on the MMA drama "Warrior" with Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton is very good. Down the line, MMA fighter Gina Carano toplines Steven Soderbergh's "Haywire" that will definitely cater to an audience that doesn't get served very often, which makes it all the more odd that DreamWorks has decided "Southpaw" isn't for them.

For a while there, Eminem was going to be one of those hyphenates that threatened for EGOT status. "8 Mile" was not only a box office success but earned the multi-platinum rapper an Academy Award and critical hosannas. Bizarrely, he followed this turn with only a cameo in "Funny People," a role not even credited on IMDb. To hear the rapper tell it during his press tours promoting the recent album "Recovery," he spent a lot of time lost in a haze of substance abuse and family troubles. Out of this turmoil emerges his next starring vehicle, "Southpaw."
