If somehow you still watched The Independent Spirit Awards late last night, despite the winners being announced hours earlier, then this is old news. But if you're like most of us and didn't, well here's a little bit of catch-up before the Oscars roll out in just a few hours.

We've barely had time to take a breath since the Gotham Awards were awarded last night, and already we're moving on, because their big cousin, the 28th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, revealed their nominations just a few minutes ago.

To paraphrase host Seth Rogen, there was this show on Saturday that you didn't watch and barely knew even existed, taking place in a tent for some fucking reason. It was the Spirit Awards, aka the Independent Spirit Awards as they used to call it (we posted the winners on Saturday) and if you want to watch the antithesis of Billy Crystal's pretty tame, often anemic, and self-congratulatory Oscar monologue and jokes, this is surely it (and it's NSFW, btw).

The awards season train continues for "The Artist," and while in years past the Spirit Awards have tended to honor edgier or more decidedly independent fare, this year it looks like even they have the fever for the silent movie sensation. Taking home the big prizes for Best Picture, Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Cinematography (Guillaume Schiffman) it looks like the stage has been set for the film to repeat these honors, and maybe more, tomorrow night at the venue formerly known as the Kodak Theater.

This weekend isn't just about the Oscars, for the record. Saturday night, as is traditional, sees the warm-up for the big show with the 2012 Spirit Awards, Film Independent's antidote to the Academy Awards, intended to honor the best of independent cinema. With recent winners of the top prize including "Juno," "The Wrestler," "Precious" and "Black Swan," they've provided the opportunity for films that are perhaps a little too dark, small or offbeat to win Best Picture from the Academy the chance to grab some gold.

Considering we've been writing about most weeks since August, it's odd to think that the awards season really only got underway this week. Everything up to now has been foreplay, but with the Gotham Awards on Sunday night, the Spirit Awards nominations and New York Film Critics' Circle Awards on Tuesday, and the National Board of Review yesterday, we're entering the underwear-removal phase of the season. To extend the metaphor. Probably too far.

You know it's the start of the awards season when two big groups are announcing their awards simultaneously, and despite the NYFCC's attempts to gain attention of late, the big news of the day is the nominations for the 27th Film Independent's Spirit Awards, which were unveiled by Anthony Mackie and Kate Beckinsale this morning.

The second-to-last hurrah of the movie season took place this afternoon, with the Independent Spirit Awards, the looser neighbor to the big Oscar show tomorrow night. And while it's unlikely "Black Swan" will repeat the feat on Sunday, Fox Searchlight must be very pleased to close off their year in such a winning a fashion.
