Superhero movies be damned, festival season is underway. Indeed, by the time you read this, this writer will be winging his way to (hopefully) sunny Italy to spend ten days or so resolutely avoiding getting anything like a tan at the 69th Venice Film Festival. The first under the new leadership of Alberto Barbera, it's lived up to his promise of being a less glitzy, more sober take, with no major studio fare to be found, and a line up that emphasizes international auteurs over the American and British filmmakers who dominated line-ups in previous years.

The last major additions to this year's Toronto International Film Festival have been unveiled, and unsurprisingly, along with the new world premieres, there's several films from the Venice line-up, which kicks off the week before. Along with the already announced "The Master" and "To The Wonder," Torontoites will also get to see Brian DePalma's "Passion" and Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," both of which are set to bow on the Lido the week before.

After something of wild goose chase (see above), the Venice line-up was announced this morning on the festival's official site, and although somewhat given away by the TIFF announcement a few days back, the big ticket is "To The Wonder," the second film in two years from anti-prolific auteur Terrence Malick. The film stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Javier Bardem, Barry Pepper, Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams, and the latter also features in another big premiere, starring alongside Noomi Rapace in Brian DePalma's latest, "Passion." The U.S. line-up is also completed by Ramin Bahrani's "At Any Price," with Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid, and in a surprise move, Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," with James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez.

"Just when we think Korine was out of twists, he's come with another one, so we wonder what's coming next," we wrote at the end of our last update about "Spring Breakers," which was recently revealed to have electronic dance music guy Skrillex providing some music for the movie, with celebrated music supervisor Randall Poster (the Wes Anderson movies) also taking part. And as we expected, another surprise, with a big musical name now also throwing his weight in there as well.

If you're asking "What's a Skrillex?" chances are you're not in high school. If you haven't heard his music -- yes, he's an electronic musician -- you might recognize his face or perhaps his mad sweep of hair that flops over the shaved side of his head. Either way, the guy won three Grammys last year and is on every kid's iPhone or Android or whatever they carry around these days. And now he's making the leap to scoring movies, and it's on a project that's already pretty far out there.

So what exactly is Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers" going to be? With a star-driven and somewhat random cast including James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and more, it seems like the wildly singular director is aiming for the mainstream. But then again, one can never discount Korine's prankster spirit, so who knows if this is just a bigger budget "Trash Humpers." Either way, everyone involved has been more than eager to show off what they've been up to, with a seemingly endless supply of stills and set pics making their way online. And the movie even had a ginormous billboard up at Cannes, the kind usually reserved for blockbusters. We're still not sure what to expect, but until we find out, here are more cheescake pics of the cast.

Yes, Harmony Korine is making a spring break movie. But of course, "Spring Breakers" is not going to be your ordinary tale of youthful reckless abandon.

Harmony Korine has made movies with dudes fucking garbage, nuns jumping out of planes, and Die Antwoord riding around in wheelchairs, but nothing is quite like "Spring Breakers." Boasting a cast of young Hollywood babes -- and James Franco -- and (relatively speaking) as mainstream a plot as anything he's ever done, this might be the weirdest movie the director has ever made simply by nature of being totally unlike his previous work. And a bunch of images have been appearing online in the past few weeks, so we've rounded some of them up here -- but let's start right from the top.

So is Harmony Korine reaching for the mainstream, or is this all just a ruse to get tweens to watch "Trash Humpers"? Whatever it is, we can't wait to find out. As you might know, Korine is currently ramping up to start filming "Spring Breakers," a road trip comedy of sorts that has an improbable cast that includes wholesome Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco (Emma Roberts recently dropped out). Well, one more unlikely name has come aboard.

Considering she's the Nickelodeon-series leading scion of Hollywood royalty, the daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts, Emma Roberts has been laudable in her desire to mix it up a bit. Of course, there were the early teen vehicles, like "Aquamarine," "Wild Child" and "Hotel For Dogs," but she's also mixed up her Hollywood fare like "Scream 4" with theoretically more interesting indie films, like "Lymelife," "It's Kind of a Funny Story" and "The Art of Getting By." We can't say we've been huge fans of any of them, but it at least shows a desire to be something other than America's next sweetheart.
