J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek' Sequel Apparently Entitled 'Star Trek Into Darkness'

As ever, the CIA-like secrecy around J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot company has proved remarkably resilient against leaks during, and after, production of "Star Trek 2." We can be pretty sure that it'll involve spaceships. We know that most of the original cast, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, and Bruce Greenwood, are returning. We know they've been joined by some new additions, including Alice Eve, Noel Clarke, Peter Weller and Benedict Cumberbatch, as a villain who may be Khan, or may be original series character Gary Mitchell. Beyond that, Abrams has been keeping things as close to the chest as ever.

A brief litle update on various bits and bobs from San Diego over the weekend so here we go...The last time we heard anything about the future of Marvel's "The Punisher" was last fall when Fox committed to a TV pilot that would bring the character to the small screen...and that's about it since then. But Thomas Jane, who played the character in the modestly received 2004 movie, has gone ahead and made his own short film without Marvel approval.

While speculation has run rampant about who exactly Benedict Cumberbatch is playing as the villain in "Star Trek 2" -- with some folks utterly convinced he's Khan (or some kind of relation) -- it looks like J.J. Abrams is throwing it back even further, should this report turn out to be on the level.

J.J. Abrams just doesn't do conventional does he? The writer-director unveiled an early look at a Klingon from his upcoming "Star Trek" sequel during this past weekend's MTV Movie Awards but, rather than putting it on the MTV website or premiering it in footage during the show, Abrams decided to purposefully leave it on a television in the background during a skit.

While "Star Trek" is now a huge, beloved franchise, recently reinvigorated by J.J. Abrams' reboot (and, fingers crossed, next year's sequel to that film), it wasn't always like that. The original 1960s series had low ratings, and only lasted three seasons, and while success in syndication let to a film version being greenlit in the aftermath of "Star Wars," that film, 1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," proved hugely expensive, and less profitable than Paramount had hoped.

Word that “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” filmmaker Edgar Wright would be reuniting with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost to complete their “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy” with “The World’s End” surprised many of us when the news arrived back at the beginning of May. All three creative minds have been very busy with a variety of projects since "Hot Fuzz," but with lensing set to begin in September, Wright and Pegg are beginning to tease out what fans can expect from their next collaboration.

Two hours after Zoe Saldana wrapped for the day on the set of J.J. Abrams' upcoming “Star Trek” sequel, she arrived in Park City, where her film “The Words” premieres at the Sundance Film Festival. It's a neat little microcosm for her career, which has seen in seemingly constant employment in the last few years, varying from little indie pictures to, well, the most successful film of all time, "Avatar."

Merely days after British multi-hyphenate Noel Clarke joined J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" sequel as a mysterious "family man," Canadian actress Nazneen Contractor has now come on board the film, filling the role of Clarke's wife and the mother of his young daughter, with the exact background of their characters still unknown.

So, remember when the Internet was convinced that KHAAAAAAAAAN would be the villain in "Star Trek 2" because Benicio Del Toro was intially tapped to play the role, and then Edgar Ramirez and Jordi Molla were being tossed around to replace him after he bounced? Well, guess again.
