Writer/Director/'Doctor Who' Star Noel Clarke Is Latest Recruit To Cast Of 'Star Trek 2'

British actor/writer/director Noel Clarke has ascended to the big leagues the old-fashioned way; by working his ass off. Having started off in the cast of long-running sitcom "Auf Wiedersehen, Pet," he broke out on-camera as Mickey Smith, boyfriend of companion Rose Tyler in the 2005 revival of "Doctor Who," dropping in and out of the show and its spin-offs across the next five years. But simultaneously, he was also carving out a screen career, penning and starring in the gritty drama "Kidulthood" in 2006, and then directing its follow-up, "Adulthood," in 2008, after the film became a surprise hit.

Get ready for the geek crowd to whip out their knives. J.J. Abrams has been consistently inconsistent about his stance on 3D, starting off the year by saying he was pretty cool on the format, to announcing the highly anticipated "Star Trek 2: It's Not About Khan, No Really, It Isn't" would be arriving in the format. Well, he's throwing fans yet another curveball.

So much Khan drama, and it turns out Benicio Del Toro isn't in the damn thing, but J.J. Abrams continues to search for his villain for "Star Trek 2" (maybe it's like, Khan's cousin?!) and two names are rising up.

Benicio Del Toro's always seemed a little uneasy with the idea of stardom. He's been working in the big leagues, on-and-off, since "Licence To Kill" in 1989, and took a big leap up with his near-incomprehensible performance in "The Usual Suspects," but every time he steps towards the A-list, he seems to take two steps back.

Is J.J. Abrams pulling a Christopher Nolan? The latter director has become known in recent years for putting faded 1980s icons in his films, from Rutger Hauer in "Batman Begins" and Eric Roberts in "The Dark Knight" to Tom Berenger in "Inception" and Matthew Modine in the upcoming "The Dark Knight Rises." Hell, he even gave David Bowie a part in "The Prestige." But now it looks like Abrams, arguably his biggest competition in terms of the new guard of super-directors, is getting in on the act.

When news broke a few weeks ago that Benicio del Toro was being courted by J.J. Abrams for the role as the Big Bad villain in their hotly anticipated "Star Trek" sequel, we guessed there was a fairly big chance that del Toro could play fan favorite 'Trek' villain Khan. That's not exactly a stretch, given comments by screenwriter Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman made it sound like they were looking into the "Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan" story as possible fodder for the sequel and the fact that del Toro and original Khan Ricardo Montalban share the same vague ethnic background (Montalban is Mexican, del Toro is Puerto Rican). In short succession it was confirmed yesterday that del Toro would play Khan...then just as quickly denied (by J.J. Abrams himself).

Not be rude or crude, but the biggest thing about Alice Eve's Hollywood movie career so far has been her considerable assets. They pretty much did half of the heavy lifting in her role as the braless babysitter in "Sex & the City 2" and the entire plot of "She's Out of My League" revolved around how hot she was. But Eve showed she can play smart and beautiful with her stint on the fucking terrible final season of "Entourage," which also displayed she could rise above brutal material. She was also charming in the underseen Brit flick "Starter For Ten" many years back, which brings us to "Star Trek 2," because guess what fanboys, she's joining the Enterprise.

Just as his hero Steven Spielberg has John Williams, writer/producer/director J.J. Abrams has stayed true to composer Michael Giacchino. The man has tuned up every one of Abrams' films to date, in addition to working on shows he's produced like "Lost" and "Alias," and once again, they will put their talents together on another project.
