The conversation for basically the next two years will be just how J.J. Abrams will approach "Star Wars: Episode 7" now that he's officially confirmed to direct. We've already discussed five things he may be bringing to the table, and suggested ten ways he can ensure the next sequel is great. But given the shroud of secrecy he puts on all of his projects, Abrams won't tell us anything until he's damn well good and ready. So until then, to the mashups!

J.J. Abrams Admits He Was Forced To Deliver 'Star Trek Into Darkness' In 3D "For Economic Reasons"

For a guy who prizes secrecy, director J.J. Abrams certainly isn't holding anything back when it comes to 3D. When it was announced at the end of 2011 that "Star Trek Into Darkness" would be arriving in 3D, it was a bit of a surprise to fans. Until then, Abrams had already expressed his reservations about working in the format, and fans were thrown for a further loop last summer when it was revealed he wasn't shooting natively in the format, but post-converting it. And while he begrudingly admits he's turning around the format, he reveals he was strongarmed into it.

J.J. Abrams Defends His Secretive Approach To Marketing, Says He Wants To Preserve The 'Special Experience' Of Seeing A Film Fresh

In an age where it seems that you walk into some movies knowing the majority of the major plot beats that will unfold over the next two hours before the projector even starts up, some find it extremely refreshing that there are filmmakers like J.J Abrams who are secretive about almost every aspect of their projects. Others find it frustrating though, and you could even argue that the shroud of secrecy around Abrams’ “Super 8” left the final product feeling somewhat anticlimctic, when it may have been appreciated more had the secrecy around the film not morphed into a snowball of hype.

There are few directors at the blockbuster level who are as engaged in the marketing of their films than J.J. Abrams. The director understands how word travels around the web and uses it both to his advantage and control. He's been behind viral campaigns for his previous films, and even though he gamely showed a select group of movie folks the 9 minute preview for "Star Trek Into Darkness" that's now playing in front of IMAX screenings of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," he asked they not reveal too much (though we just saw it in the theater and broke it down a bit more in detail here). But it's purity of experience he's hoping to achieve, which brings us to this new teaser trailer.

9-Minute 'Star Trek Into Darkness' IMAX Preview Makes Us Ready To Be Beamed Up Again

Starting this weekend, in select IMAX screens across the country, there will be a special, nine-minute preview of May's hotly anticipated sci-fi sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness," in a marketing maneuver similar to last Christmas' "The Dark Knight Rises" prologue, which was attached to IMAX prints of "Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol." Last week's teaser of the trailer (or whatever that was) was purposefully elliptical, showing only visual effects-y glimpses of the scenarios that crew of the Starship Enterprise (including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana) will face this time around. And while these opening nine minutes aren't exactly revelatory, they do give a good idea of what will be in store for audiences this summer. And based on the preview, we are very, very excited.

With a nine-minute prologue playing in front of IMAX 3D showings of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" starting tonight -- and a full length trailer playing in front of non-IMAX prints -- we're getting our first real glimpse at Benedict Cumberbatch's villainous role in "Star Trek Into The Darkness." After months of speculation about who exactly the character is -- Khan? Telepath Gary Mitchell? -- we finally have a name.

There's a hot new trend sweeping the land, and it looks like whoever provides glass prisons for movie hero villains is making a mean buck. After Silva was put in a transparent tube thingy in "Skyfall," and Loki in a similarly see-through contraption in "The Avengers" (and both wanted to be captured and escaped easily... another trend!) it looks "Star Trek Into Darkness" is following the same playbook.

Considering audiences will be getting a full nine minutes in front of IMAX screenings of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," maybe it makes sense that the rest us who aren't going to Peter Jackson's movie on opening weekend will have to be content with this one-minute announcement teaser for now.

We remain continually impressed by the extent to which J.J. Abrams is able to keep things under wraps on his major movies; less than six months to release, and all we know about his "Star Trek" sequel is that it's got a title -- "Star Trek Into Darkness," a vague logline, and the internet's boyfriend Benedict Cumberbatch as the villain. But Abrams' mystery box can't stay shut forever, even for a guaranteed hit like next summer's blockbuster, and the floodgates are soon to open, with a trailer on its way next week, and nine minutes of IMAX footage from the film set to play before "The Hobbit; An Unexpected Journey" next week.
