With the news arriving yesterday that "Lost" co-creator and "Star Trek" director J.J. Between the recent Television Critics Association winter press tour and the 18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards, there's been a lot of news trickling in about related Joss Whedon projects like "The Avengers 2," ABC's would-be "S.H.I.E.L.D." TV show, and more. Perhaps most interesting is Whedon recently admitting that he would have loved to direct "Star Wars: Episode VII" and that he's bummed there's no way his busy schedule would allow it.

Easily one of the biggest pieces of movie news that arrived in 2012 was the announcement that more "Star Wars" sequels were on the way. And heading into 2013, it's still on everyone's mind, even though "Star Wars: Episode 7" isn't due into theaters until 2015. What we know already is that Michael Arndt is writing the script, but the million dollar question remains: who is going to direct? Numerous big names -- J.J. Abrams, Steven Spielberg and more -- have taken themselves out of the race, and another who politely declined the gig was an early fan favorite: Guillermo Del Toro.

Here's some obvious news for those that have been paying attention: J.J Abrams has passed on the opportunity to direct "Star Wars: Episode VII." Not much of a shocker there. In fact, he already said as much in November, and took himself out of the running then, but hey, it's a slow holiday week.

Ok, this is an odd one that no one seems to have noticed nor made much fuss about. In the latest issue of Empire magazine detailing the history leading up to "Star Wars: Episode VII," the publication says George Lucas originally envisioned four "Star Wars" trilogies and then dropped one in the late 1970s.

There's been talk that Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia will all return in one form or another. And did plot details just leak about what Skywalker's role will be?

We live in a time where Jason Flemyng sort of pausing and making a funny face in an interview is "confirmation" that the rumored Matthew Vaughn is going to direct "Star Wars: Episode 7." But that's not to say that among the fanboy wishlists and speculation that there isn't legitimacy to some of the names being tossed around.

"Star Wars" can sadly bring out the worst in people. The rumor mill has been foaming like a rabid dog this week – the obsessed fanbase so eager and desperate for details they will take the tiniest of morsels of information and eviscerate, expound, exaggerate and speculate over them endlessly and relentlessly for anything resembling a clue. Even as one fire or two has been quelled, a few more nuggets have been dropped that have started a near-feeding frenzy of rumor and 2+2=5 conjecture.
