Exclusive: Jonathan Demme Exits Stephen King Adaptation '11/22/63'

Moving easily and often between documentaries and feature film projects, Jonathan Demme has always got a few things on the go at any given time. This year alone has seen him direct theater legends Wallace Shawn and André Gregory in their re-teaming in "Wally And André Shoot Ibsen," hit the festival circuit with "Enzo Avitabile Music Life," get involved as a producer on "Song One" with Anne Hathaway set to star, and pick up a directing credit on "Old Fires." But it looks like one project has fallen off his slate.

Somewhat surprisingly, CBS has bypassed the usual pilot song-and-dance and gone ahead and ordered thirteen episodes of "Under the Dome," an adaptation of Stephen King's beloved doorstop-sized novel, adapted by comic book creator Brian K. Vaughan and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. The series should begin airing/scaring the crap out of audiences next summer.

Stephen King is, all of a sudden, a hot property again. One of the major forces in popular literature of the past forty-odd years, it's been a few years since the last major King adaptation, but a wealth of projects from the director are on their way in the next few years.

So, which would you rather see at this point, because at least one of them is coming: the story of Jack Torrance before the events at the Overlook Hotel or what happens to Danny afterward? If your answer is "neither," well too bad, because at least one of these is getting made. Maybe both.

Well, Ron Howard tried and failed (and is still trying) to get a monumental three film, two TV series adaptation of "The Dark Tower" off the ground, but Warner Bros. is hoping they can get their own epic Stephen King story onto the big screen. And unlike the plethora of King related projects on both the small and big screen, the talent attached to this has us at full attention.

Well, as far as decisions regarding beloved films being callously remade, it could be a lot worse than MGM and Screen Gems tapping "Boys Don't Cry" director Kimberly Peirce for their big screen redux of Stephen King's telekenetic horror show "Carrie." The 1976 original film, as we all know, was directed by Brian De Palma and is, more or less (the "less" is that sped-up scene where the guys are trying on the tuxes), a masterpiece.

Well, the writing was pretty much on the wall already before it was announced yesterday that Universal had yanked the cord on "The Dark Tower." Despite lots of movement late last year and early this year, with Javier Bardem being tipped for the lead role and lots of excitement around the multi-platform mega franchise that would've seen Stephen King's book series stretched out over three films and television series, word just as quickly quieted as the honchos over at Universal began to get cold feet over the scope and more importantly the cost of the project. Word was that the budget was being reworked and the production start pushed back, but as director Ron Howard begin circling new projects including a "Spy Vs. Spy" movie and the Formula 1 racing drama "Rush" which is already casting up we can't say anyone was shocked by the collapse of "The Dark Tower." Least of all, the author himself.
