An assortment of news, rolling in from Cannes like the waves on the beach there. Probably. I've never been. Anyway. "The Raid" helmer Gareth Evans is currently in production on his most-likely bone-crunching follow-up "Berandal," and, while he's got some Hollywood projects in development, isn't going to be abandoning Indonesian martial-arts pictures altogether; Screen Daily report that the Welsh ex-pat will serve as action director on "The Night Comes For Us," a vehicle for "The Raid" vet, and "Fast & Furious 6" stand out Joe Taslim. The film will see Taslim as a Triad enforcer who accidentally causes a massacre, and will be properly directed by Timo Tjahjanto.

It’s often an easy way to handicap your film, by centering it on a child character and demanding a great deal from the young actor. By definition, children are not fully-formed people, but a character in a film must be either fully-formed to yield proper dramatic results, or so uniquely authentic that it’s like catching chaos in a bottle, an approach that can create a serious cognitive dissonance when youth collides with seasoned actors. Remarkably, such chaos is present in young Onata Aprile, the title character of “What Maisie Knew,” an affecting new contemporary drama that never once feels phony when the camera is fixed on her face.

News

Marking the fourth collaboration between director Michael Winterbottom and actor Steve Coogan, "The Look of Love" is based on the true story of porn baron Paul Raymond. Raymond amassed over $1 billion through purchasing prime real estate in London's Soho, becoming Britain's richest man and earning the title "The King of Soho." Anna Friel plays his wife Jean, who posed for some of Raymond's porno shoots and ultimately received a record divorce-settlement. Their daughter is played by charming and soon-to-be everywhere Imogen Poots. You can peak in at the couple's relationship in the clip below.

Many suspected that after "Tristram Shandy: A Cock And Bull Story," if you were to get Michael Winterbottom to direct Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon reading the phone book, it would almost certainly turn out to be rib-tickling stuff. The theory's been put to the test this year with "The Trip," which features the British comics playing themselves on a journey around England's Lake District eating at a series of top restaurants: not exactly "Mr. Popper's Penguins," as far as high concepts go, but it's happily turned out to be one of the best comedies of the year, and something of an indie sleeper, with clips from the film going viral. And the good news is, there's more on the way.

'The Daily Show' Correspondent Aasif Mandvi Also Circling A RoleIt says something about directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, that half a decade since they rocked the indie movie world with "Little Miss Sunshine," that they are able to assemble the kind of cast they have lined up for "He Loves Me." Written by actress Zoe Kazan, the project is a meta-strange sounding road-trip film that centers on Calvin (Paul Dano) a young novelist who achieves success early in his career but begins to face struggles. As the young protagonist follows the advice of writing the woman he thinks will love him in a bid to overcome his writer’s block, he ends up willing her into existence. Annette Bening is also on board as Calvin's concerned and artistic Mom. It's a concept worthy of Charlie Kaufman and ripe with potential so no wonder this thing is packing itself full of stars.

Even though the film received respectful, rather than rave, reviews on its Sundance bow (our own review was one of the more positive), you can't cast Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Rashida Jones, Steve Coogan, Hugh Dancy, T.J. Miller, Adam Scott and Kathryn Hahn in a comedy together without leaving us begging to see the finished film, and that's why we've been firmly looking forward to "Our Idiot Brother" all year long.

While he hasn't quite become the Dudley Moore-style megastar he once seemed likely to be, Steve Coogan's big-screen career has been modestly successful so far, not least when he collaborates with prolific British director Michael Winterbottom. In "24 Hour Party People," "A Cock and Bull Story" and "The Trip," they've produced three warm, terrific comedies together, and we're always pleased to hear that the duo are continuing to collaborate.

Bronagh Gallagher Also On Board; Liam Cunningham Exits?Steve Coogan and Robert Sheehan aren't exactly strangers to the exploration of real life musical figures on film, having both starred in "24 Hour Party People" and "Killing Bono" respectively, and it looks like they're set to go down a similar path once again. The two actors have joined "Cherrybomb" co-directors Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa's "Good Vibrations," the story of Northern Ireland's godfather of punk, Terri Hooley.

Scott McGehee and David Siegel are a curious directing pair. With a mere four films across over fifteen years, they've made consistently interesting work without ever quite knocking one out of the park. Their noirish racial-identity debut "Suture" is arguably their best -- championed by Steven Soderbergh, and with a terrific turn by Dennis Haysbert, it still holds up well today. Their long-awaited follow up "The Deep End" had another storming central performance, from Tilda Swinton, but had a more straightforward take on the genre, while kabbalistic spelling oddity "Bee Season," with Richard Gere, didn't really work, and the Joseph Gordon-Levitt indie "Uncertainty" never got much traction with audiences or critics.
