While Joe Carnahan has lately been getting press for the movies he hasn't been able to make ("Daredevil" and potential Oscar winner "Death Wish"), you may have forgotten he's got "Stretch" in the can. The low budget comedy-thriller (it cost under $5 million) had been scheduled to hit theaters on March 21st, but perhaps the lack of a marketing campaign should've indicated something was afoot. Indeed, THR reports that Universal has dropped the movie from their schedule, with no current plans to release it in theaters.

Director Joe Carnahan’s mysterious project, “Stretch,” continues to gain a diverse cast. Little has been revealed about the plot other than that it involves a chauffeur who picks up an eccentric billionaire with “devious appetites.” It’s being touted as an action-comedy, which works to the advantage of new cast member James Badge Dale, who has jumped onto the film in an unspecified role.

Chris Pine
A long, long time ago, before Chris Pine was Captain Kirk, he had a very different kind of role; one of the three psychotic Tremor Brothers (alongside Kevin Durand and Maury Sterling), "Mad Max"-like neo-Nazis who stole the show in Joe Carnahan's fun-on-paper, less-so-in-practice "Smokin' Aces." The film didn't make much of an impact, and many forget that Pine was even in, but he clearly made an impression on the director; Carnahan wanted to cast Pine alongside George Clooney in his film version of James Ellroy's "White Jazz" (and in his Escobar movie "Killing Pablo") only to be foiled when Pine was cast in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" reboot.

It's AFM time, which means lots of projects are being announced, but whether or not they actually get made anytime soon continues to be up in the air. In fact, there is such a glut of films being tossed around the sales floor, only the barest scraps of info about some of them are making it out.
