Fourteen years after he helped launch the Dogme 95 movement with his family drama “The Celebration,” director Thomas Vinterberg returned to Cannes this past month with his latest film, “The Hunt.” As the Croisette is wont to do, reactions were immensely divided, with some calling the film a masterpiece of near-unbearable dread, while others found the film a manipulative soap opera. Luckily for the filmmakers though, those in distribution kept a keen eye, and have now tapped the film for a future US release.

Every major film festival ends with films being gobbled up by distributors, and the Cannes Film Festival is no different.

Tracking the festival circuit can sometimes be a frustrating venture as distribution deals (or lack thereof) can negate anticipation and excitement. For smaller-name films, foreign ones in particular, it's sometimes a matter of years before a far away festival hit is released locally. American fans of South Korean helmer Hong Sang-soo and Scotsman Ken Loach can rejoice, however, as the duo's latest films from Cannes have now secured stateside distribution deals.

While there will be a lot of dealmaking done over glasses of chardonnay at Cannes, a few are going to be done before the festival kicks off, and in what is one of the biggest so far, one of the most high profile movies premiering on the Croisette has now landed U.S. distribution.

'Salmon Fishing In Yemen' Baits Spring Release DateWerner Herzog is having one helluva 2011. His 3D documentary "Cave Of Forgotten Dreams" has been an arthouse smash hit, still playing theaters (in Montreal where this writer is from, it was brought back for as second run due to popular demand -- that pretty much never happens) and in the best casting news of the year, Herzog landed the villain role opposite Tom Cruise in the thriller "One Shot." Just typing that out still makes our mind reel. He hit TIFF last month with his new documentary "Into The Abyss," and while Sundance Selects were going to wait until 2012 to release it, Herzog has twisted their arm to get into the theaters a little bit sooner. Like next month.

While Sundance Selects Grabs Nanni Moretti's 'Habemus Papum'One of the more puzzling outcomes of the Cannes Film Festival has been the failure of Aki Kaurismaki's "Le Havre," which was second only to "The Artist" as far as crowd-pleasing hits on the Croisette go, to land a distributor. Sure, Kaurismaki's never exactly been a cross-over director in the U.S, but his latest, a hilarious, touching look at illegal immigration, picked up outstanding reviews and audience reactions -- we called it a "pure delight."
