August Josh Hartnett
This spring Josh Hartnett returns to our collective consciousness in Showtime's "Penny Dreadful," and it has been a long time since we've seen him anything. The past four of five years has seen the actor drift with indies nobody saw ("Stuck Between Stations," "August," "Girl Walks Into A Bar"), genre fare that no one saw ("Bunraku," "I Come With The Rain") and troubled international blockbusters ("Singularity"). But perhaps his career might've been different, if he had made some different choices.

Bryan Singer Superman Returns Kevin Spacey Brandon Routh
For a film that no-one really seems to much like and everyone thinks of as fairly unmemorable, the filmosphere sure does do a lot of talking about 2006's Bryan Singer-directed Superman reboot, “Superman Returns.” We right here have debated its merits as a Superman movie, trashed it, and speculated about the sequel to it that never was on account of its having underwhelmed more or less everybody.

Ranking The Superman films
Perhaps you’ve heard about a little movie that’s opening this week called “Man of Steel.” The small, under-the-radar, kitchen sink drama follows the adventures of one Superman as he struggles with the kind of identity issues familiar to many x-ray sighted, preternaturally strong orphan aliens gifted with the power of flight, and saves humankind from a terrible peril. Our review will be coming later today, and while we’re not going to include “Man of Steel” in our rating of the Superman films right now, come back next week when more of us have seen it and you can argue over its correct placement.

Man, you gotta feel a bit for Brandon Routh. It was only seven years ago that he was given the duty to play Clark Kent and reboot the Superman franchise in Bryan Singer's "Superman Returns" and well... that didn't quite work out...

Currently on a publicity tour for "Jack the Giant Slayer" and working to bring together "X-Men: Days of Future Past," the next leg of the reinvigorated X-Men franchise, Bryan Singer has spoken of how difficult he found it letting them go the first time around, when he departed the franchise (of which he directed the first two installments) in favor of rival superhero picture "Superman Returns."

Ahh, "Superman Returns," the prickly, uncomfortable thorn in the comic book movie geek's side. Far better than say, half of the 20th Century Fox films -- "Daredevil," "Elektra," "Fantastic Four," "Ghost Rider" and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" -- or half the super hero movies ever made including "Punisher," "Catwoman," "Jonah Hex," "Swamp Thing," "Batman Forever," "Batman & Robin," etc., etc. The film is admittedly uneven and somewhat unsatisfying, but there's something about its DNA that really riles up some particular comic book movie fans.
