Sylvester Stallone Thriller 'Headshots' & Steve Carell Comedy 'Burt Wonderstone' Both Lose Directors

It's got to be hard for a director to walk away from a feature-directing gig. If you're lucky, you get to make a film once every couple of years, and, while some helmers are able to boost their income with rewrite work or commercials, or TV and music videos gigs, sometimes that one feature is your only income. But at the same time, you only get to make a certain number of movies in a career, and if the stars aren't aligning correctly, sometimes the only thing you can do is pack your bags. It's not an uncommon occurence -- Guillermo Del Toro leaving "The Hobbit" and Darren Aronofsky bailing on "The Wolverine" being two recent examples -- and it's just happened on another pair of A-lister-led projects.

Sylvester Stallone Won't Be Writing Or Directing 'The Expendables 2'

Call it mad genius or a stroke of luck, but Sylvester Stallone seemed to have found a cinematic scratch that wasn't being itched when he got together a bunch of aging action stars, put them in a movie he co-wrote and directed, and smiled to himself as "The Expendables" went on and snatched up $275 million in global box office receipts. Not too bad. And while the actor/director/writer has long talked up his sequel to the film -- even before the first one was released -- it looks like for the next entry in the franchise, Stallone is going to take a step back.

Sylvester Stallone To Star In Wayne Kramer's 'Headshot'

Wayne Kramer's career has been a bit of a headscratcher. The director came out of nowhere with "The Cooler," the Sundance sensation that went on to earn Alec Baldwin a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. Kramer then followed that up with the the pulpy "Running Scared," a ludicrous post-Tarantino tale that is severely overrated by its niche of fans. He then shifted gears again for the "Crash"-aping "Crossing Over" which was ultimately taken out of his hands by Harvey Weinstein and hacked down from its original 2 hour and 20 minute runtime to the version that's out there now. So what will Kramer do next? Well it appears that he's moved on from "Kane & Lynch" after producers re-approached him last fall and his "Pretty Boy Floyd" gangster pic, announced last summer, we presume remains in development. Looks like he'll just crank out a mindless cop picture in the interim.

The Never-Happened Fake-Trailer Was Supposed To Star Stallone, Schwarzenegger & WillisAlright, we're on IndieWire now (hold on, don't groan, there is a point to this) and before the move this interesting could-have-been tidbit got lost in the moving shuffle. You'll recall earlier this month Austin filmmaker Robert Rodriguez took part in a Facebook livechat and it was there he revealed that "Sin City 2" would be the follow-up film after "Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World," not "Deadpool" (and obviously that was his way of saying. "I'm passing" as Swedish filmmaker Adam Berg appears to be the frontrunner for the directing gig).
