Armond White Says 'Ghost Rider 2' & 'Taken 2' Are Better Than 'Zero Dark Thirty' In 2012 Wrap Up

2013 is barely two weeks old, an Armond White is being his Armond-iest. In case you missed it, the cantankerous, contrarian film critic heckled Michael Moore at the the New York Film Critics Circle awards ceremony this week. In presenting the award for Best First Film to David France for the now Oscar nominated “How to Survive a Plague,” Moore reflected that “the Cardinal couldn’t get through Mass at St. Patrick’s,” citing the film's coverage of the ACT UP protests who interrupted Christmas mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral in the '80s. And this set off Armond.

Well, that was fast. Last week, while speaking to the press, actor turned action star Liam Neeson (essentially) said thanks but no thanks to the possibility of a "Taken 3" film. Then "Taken 2" was released on Friday and came up with a impressive $50 million in its opening weekend (double the opening figure of the original), proving that audiences still love aging dads that will find you, kill you and then fuck you up if you mess with their wives and daughters.

Discuss: Will A Blockbuster Opening Weekend Change Liam Neeson's Mind About 'Taken 3'?

Few massive hits of the last few years came out of the blue in the way that "Taken" did. The Luc Besson-produced actioner starring Liam Neeson had performed decently internationally, but clearly hopes weren't especially high: Neeson hadn't toplined a hit on his own for at least a decade, if ever, and the film was snuck into theaters months after it played in the rest of the world, on Superbowl weekend 2009, the place where action movies go to die.

Halloween is still a few weeks away, but, like the drug stores that erect candy aisles in August, the studios are rolling out the thematic material a little early. A reinterpretation of "Frankenstein" for kids (it's never too early to start them on the classics) is complemented by the horror-movie-of-the-week and a number of films that delve into more realistic terrors, like the demise of healthcare or the drug problem in the United States. Also, a Sarah Palin surrogate sculpts with butter. Spooky.

There’s diminishing returns, and then there’s “Taken 2,” the next, and probably last installment of the “Taken” franchise. Of course, it’s a piece of a whole, only the latest in the body of work from producer Luc Besson (again sharing screenwriting duties with Robert Mark Kamen). But Besson’s intriguing late-career activity as a producer of savvy action trash reaches it’s nadir in this monotone punch-fest that is tirelessly rote in it’s stubborn desire to refuse any sense of ingenuity.

In the never ending quest by 20th Century Fox's marketing department to show audiences the entire movie in clip format before it opens, yet another snippet from "Taken 2" has landed, featuring another glimpse of an action scene.

'Taken 2' Soundtrack Features Two Key Songs From 'Drive' & More

Listen, we know that songs are never just used once, and popular tunes can be utilized across any number of films. And if we're going to get technical about this whole thing, Kavinsky & Lovefoxx's "Nightcall" actually featured on "The Lincoln Lawyer" soundtrack before it became massive with "Drive" (though music supervisor Eric Craig worked on both films). But it's undeniable that Nicolas Winding Refn's film was one of the big soundtrack stories of 2011, spawning a "Drive" tour with the bands this spring, and a vinyl reissue of the album this summer, so this move by whoever is working on "Taken 2" feels a bit lazy.

Marketing movies is one part art, one part science and third part sheer luck, as studios forever try to make sure their films both find their intended audience and still have enough appeal for the magical four quadrants. But over at 20th Century Fox, they seem to care less about crafting a campaign, preferring to just show you as much of the movie as possible in advance. Just look at their rollout for "Prometheus" and "X-Men: First Class" in case you need any more proof. And so it goes with "Taken 2" as yet another clip has dropped.

There are two ways you can use a GPS. One way is calmly punch in the coordinates and let the little gizmo do its work on the dashboard. The Bryan Mills way -- which only comes into practice when you're being chased Euro thugs -- is to grip the thing in your hands like the jaws of life and furiously punch in details like you were playing "Angry Birds" after drinking a six pack of Red Bull. Welcome to "Taken 2."

Advice to bad guys: don't underestimate Kim Mills. While you might think her father Bryan Mills is the only one with a special set of skills, that shit is genetic, dog, and it looks like Kim can pretty much do a standing leap from rooftop to rooftop. Welcome to "Taken 2: Tooked In Istanbul" where logic and reason go flying out the window.
