Tammy, Melisa McCarthy
As the most Redbox rented woman in America, it's safe to say that Melissa McCarthy's popularity is unassailable. And even if the results of "Identity Thief" and "The Heat" may be have been mixed (at best), who cares what critics think as long as audiences keep showing up? And Warner Bros. is banking on those fans once again coming out this summer.

Tammy, Melisa McCarthy
In case you missed it, Redbox revealed their top 10 most rented titles of 2013 on Christmas Eve, and two films from comedian Melissa McCarthy, "The Heat" and "Identity Thief," nabbed the top two slots. Not too shabby. Plus now you know what the rest of the country does when they rent movies. Suffice to say the "Bridesmaids" breakout actress has become a bona fide star in her own right.

Melissa McCarthy certainly seems to be building her career the right way. She first impressed in a big way on the small screen for many years in a supporting role on “Gilmore Girls,” and that eventually paid off with a lead role on a network sitcom with “Mike & Molly.” She’s paid her dues on the big screen too, with a slew of supporting roles eventually leading to “Bridesmaids” and after scoring a hit as a co-lead alongside Jason Bateman in “Identity Thief” she’s ready to go it alone.

While the mild-mannered Jason Bateman and the zaftig Melissa McCarthy may not be the likeliest of Hollywood hotshots, they are about to release the highest-profile comedy of the year so far with “Identity Thief” this Friday, and the two have capitalized on the film’s buzz by announcing their respective exciting next ventures.

After being embedded within the fiercely intelligent and funny women of “Bridesmaids” as that film's secret weapon, actress Melissa McCarthy has since found herself confidently branching off its franchise potential while staying focused on her own. Besides deeming a Wiig-less “Bridesmaids” sequel a “terrible idea,” she's stayed busy putting together her own comedy project, “Tammy” and now following a brief hiccup with the departure of veteran “SNL” director Beth McCarthy-Miller, the project remains alive with a new possible addition to the cast.

Geez, today seems to be the day for Melissa McCarthy news. She's already made her feelings known about a "Bridesmaids" sequel without Kristen Wiig, and it seems is putting the massive comedy hit in the rear-view as her first major project after the blockbuster movie is now beginning to take shape.

You can't stop Hollywood from trying to make stars, even if the audience isn't biting. After the complete failure of "Warrior" and "The Thing," Joel Edgerton remains in demand, evevn if he can still walk the streets completely unrecognized. He was in the mix for a potential supporting role in the now-defunct "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." and recently was sought to play Themosticles in the currently-gestating "300: Battle Of Artemisium." However, Variety has heard something new on the Aussie grapevine: they're reporting that Edgerton has turned the role down, leaving the Noam Murro actioner without a leading man.

'The Help' Director Tate Taylor Being Lined Up To Direct Melissa McCarthy's R-Rated 'Tammy'
Despite the (somewhat unfair) criticisms lobbed at "The Help," its director Tate Taylor has walked away smiling. Disney's movie powered its way to over $175 million worldwide and lest you think that number was padded out by foreign tickets, guess again -- 90% of that figure is domestic (no pun intended). Clearly winning over audiences in a big way, and with Oscar nominations a strong possibility for both Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, Taylor could pretty much do anything he wants. And it looks like he might want to make a total gear change for his next effort, pairing up with another talent who is very hot right now.

Since her breakthrough role as the crass but loveable Megan in this summer’s “Bridesmaids,” Melissa McCarthy has already hosted “Saturday Night Live” and won a Primetime Emmy for her role on the popular (but insufferable) CBS comedy “Mike & Molly.” Having already completed a role in “Bridesmaids” producer Judd Apatow’s anticipated “Knocked Up” spinoff “This is Forty,” it should come as no surprise that McCarthy is quickly earning the right to get a project going on her name alone.

Also Writing Dark Comedy With 'The Help' Director Tate Taylor; Jon Hamm Says He Doubts Kristen Wiig Will Want To Do 'Bridesmaids 2'So just how scorching is the heat on Melissa McCarthy right now after her breakout turn earlier this year in "Bridesmaids"? Well, after taking the statue for Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for "Mike & Molly" (a show wholly undeserving of her talents) at the Emmy's talk pretty much immediately began for an Oscar run for the actress. And while we'll believe it when we see it, that's just an indication of how universally beloved in a span of about four or five months. And Hollywood isn't wasting any time in making sure she has gigs lined up for her next hiatus from the CBS sitcom. "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig and Judd Apatow are already developing a movie for her which may star Jon Hamm and she's got "ID Theft" lined up with Jason Bateman. And Judd Apatow also gave her a part in his forthcoming "This Is Forty." But believe it or not, that's not all.
