Transformers: Age of Extinction
Uh oh, the box office is down about 45% from last year’s July 4th weekend. The sky is falling! OK, maybe not so much, but a malaise has certainly kicked in with audiences that aren’t connecting with films in a major way. This time last year, the July 4th weekend sold $220 million worth of tickets (a 12% increase from 2012). It did so on the backs of “Despicable Me 2” and even the flop of the “Lone Ranger” (which couldn’t crack $30 million in its opening weekend). Fast forward to 2014 and it’s not looking hot in comparison at all. Why that is? Well, despite all those that actually love Michael Bay/love to hate-watch Michael Bay, “Transformers: Age of Extinction” fell a rather substantial 64% in its second week.

Tammy
The marketing campaign for "Tammy," the new Melissa McCarthy comedy, has always been somewhat baffling. Instead of a straight-up teaser, Warner Bros chose to release a snippet of a single scene, where McCarthy's titular character was robbing a greasy fast food restaurant. It was funny enough, but it didn't get you any closer to understanding what the movie was actually about. The fact that this elliptical teaser was the cornerstone of the entire promotional campaign did, however, tell you something: that if anyone understood what the actual movie consisted of, they'd probably stay away in droves. Because "Tammy" is a boring, unfunny road movie that limps along idly, consisting of a string of nonsensical set pieces and halfhearted stabs at character development that come across as off-putting and odd. As soon as our screening ended, a woman behind us sighed and said, "That was uncomfortable." We couldn't agree more.

Tammy
If you hadn’t already noticed, “Bridesmaids” earned a lot of cache for lot of talent involved. Primarily star, co-writer/co-producer Kristen Wiig, but also break-out co-star Melissa McCarthy who earned the rare Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar nomination for her hilarious turn in the film. Wiig parlayed her success into personal projects and a directing gig that’s coming up with the movie’s co-writer Annie Mumolo. And McCarthy has done much the same, only involved her comedian partner and husband Ben Falcone (both of them are Groundlings alum).

Tammy, Melissa McCarthy
Thanks to the success of "Bridesmaids" in 2011 and "The Heat" in 2013, Melissa McCarthy is becoming the queen of summer comedy. This season, she's hoping to do it again with "Tammy." So what drew her to this project? Well, she's playing a character “who’s kind of falling apart and has to get out of town but her car is broken down” she told EW last year. “So she ends up on the road with her grandma, who has drinking problem for sure. They both have their issues they’re not acknowledging and they’re leaving town without knowing where they’re going. I love that there’s something that happens in a car with people where all bets off. You’re off your rhythm, off your schedule, you’re forced to be completely adaptable or die.”

Tammy, Melisa McCarthy
As the most Redbox rented woman in America, it's safe to say that Melissa McCarthy's popularity is unassailable. And even if the results of "Identity Thief" and "The Heat" may be have been mixed (at best), who cares what critics think as long as audiences keep showing up? And Warner Bros. is banking on those fans once again coming out this summer.

Tammy, Melisa McCarthy
In case you missed it, Redbox revealed their top 10 most rented titles of 2013 on Christmas Eve, and two films from comedian Melissa McCarthy, "The Heat" and "Identity Thief," nabbed the top two slots. Not too shabby. Plus now you know what the rest of the country does when they rent movies. Suffice to say the "Bridesmaids" breakout actress has become a bona fide star in her own right.

Melissa McCarthy certainly seems to be building her career the right way. She first impressed in a big way on the small screen for many years in a supporting role on “Gilmore Girls,” and that eventually paid off with a lead role on a network sitcom with “Mike & Molly.” She’s paid her dues on the big screen too, with a slew of supporting roles eventually leading to “Bridesmaids” and after scoring a hit as a co-lead alongside Jason Bateman in “Identity Thief” she’s ready to go it alone.

While the mild-mannered Jason Bateman and the zaftig Melissa McCarthy may not be the likeliest of Hollywood hotshots, they are about to release the highest-profile comedy of the year so far with “Identity Thief” this Friday, and the two have capitalized on the film’s buzz by announcing their respective exciting next ventures.

After being embedded within the fiercely intelligent and funny women of “Bridesmaids” as that film's secret weapon, actress Melissa McCarthy has since found herself confidently branching off its franchise potential while staying focused on her own. Besides deeming a Wiig-less “Bridesmaids” sequel a “terrible idea,” she's stayed busy putting together her own comedy project, “Tammy” and now following a brief hiccup with the departure of veteran “SNL” director Beth McCarthy-Miller, the project remains alive with a new possible addition to the cast.

Geez, today seems to be the day for Melissa McCarthy news. She's already made her feelings known about a "Bridesmaids" sequel without Kristen Wiig, and it seems is putting the massive comedy hit in the rear-view as her first major project after the blockbuster movie is now beginning to take shape.
