Armie Hammer Signs On To 'The Brothers Grimm: Snow White,' Saoirse Ronan In Talks For Title Role

As we're sure you're aware by now, there are three duelling projects retelling the tale of Snow White in development. One, Disney's "Snow and the Seven," is the furthest away -- while "Toy Story 3" writer Michael Arndt recently signed on to do a script polish, and director Francis Lawrence is still nominally attached, it has no star, and no start date. Another, Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman," was once leading the pack, and does have Kristen Stewart signed on in the title role, but seems to have hit problems in recent days -- Charlize Theron still hasn't signed on as the villain, and Viggo Mortensen's talks have apparently collapsed.

It's been a long dance and a patient courtship that began way back in December, but Deadline reports that Julia Roberts will close on a deal this afternoon to star as the Evil Queen in Tarsem's 3D "Brothers Grimm: Snow White."

Can't keep track of the trifecta of Snow White movies in development? We don't blame you. Just as Kristen Stewart has entered negotiations for "Snow White And The Huntsman" for Universal this evening, and Michael Arndt came aboard to write "Snow And The Seven" for Disney yesterday, Relativity Media have countered with news of one of the biggest stars in the world now in talks for their film.

Michael Fassbender The Frontrunner To Play The Huntsman In Universal's Version Of ProjectHollywood loves its dueling projects racing to get to the screen first. They make for a good story, and generally who ever gets there second doesn't get there at all. See Baz Luhrmann's "Alexander The Great" project with Leonardo DiCaprio that was basically shuttered because Oliver Stone's "Alexander" arrived first, and Toby Jones' "Infamous" that limped unnoticed into theaters when "Capote" and Philip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar-winning performance stole all its heat.

At Least Two Snow White Projects In The Works From Various Studios Racing To Be FirstYou've got to love herd-think from the studios. The race to bring a live-action version of "Snow White" to the screen is on with three different studios clamoring to get their version to audiences first. The first salvo in the "Snow White" battle has been fired by Universal who staked claim to Dec 21, 2012 for their Rupert Sanders version -- called "Snow White & The Huntsman" -- that could star Charlize Theron and Johnny Depp if the rumors turn out to be true. So eager were they to plant their early claim, Universal has chosen the same release date of part one of "The Hobbit," which means they're either supremely confident or severely nuts.
