Craig Brewer, director of the upcoming reimagining of “Footloose,” told The Playlist over the weekend that he recently finished his latest draft on a new script about Edgar Rice Burroughs’ iconic jungle-dweller, Tarzan. But while the commercial promise of his current film heralds good things for future ones, he said he isn’t counting his chickens before they’re hatched.

Also Updates On 'Mother Trucker,' Discusses 'Hustle & Flow' Sequel Pitch Craig Brewer causes a few differences in opinion here at The Playlist. Some of us find his two big films to date, "Hustle & Flow" and "Black Snake Moan" somewhere between overrated and terrible, while this writer happens to find both grimy fun, with some smart things to say about racial and sexual politics, and an unusually good sense of musicality. Whichever side of the fence you fall, there can't have been many who were happy when Brewer signed on to direct the long-in-the-offing remake of "Footloose" for Paramount, which hits theaters in October.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Or perhaps, the mighty weren't such hot shit to begin with. Craig Brewer inexplicably got Oscar love for the overrated "Hustle & Flow," with a nomination going to Terrence Howard and a win for the wretched song "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" by Three Six Mafia. Anyway, Brewer followed that film up with the laughably terrible "Black Snake Moan" and is now reduced to directing the "Footloose" remake which comes out later this year. But he's hoping a big new franchise project can get him back on his feet.
