While the Michael Bay-produced “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot continues to fight its way through leaked script drafts and halted production borne from budget issues, the spotlight has forced its way over on “Turtles' co-creator Kevin Eastman, who has the necessary job of keeping interest piqued. For him, that means name-checking every successful film of the last few years, apparently.

Earlier this week, fans of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle” franchise (who still wear footy pajamas and eat cereal stuffed with marshmallows) became incensed when an early version of the proposed remake’s script (entitled “Ninja Turtles” and written by “Alias” alums Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec) was both posted and reviewed by website TMNT NOT TANT (the website’s name is a reference to the reboot’s extraterrestrial origin for the characters). Paramount, who is set to distribute the Platinum Dunes-produced project in the summer of 2014, ordered the script to be taken down, and now Michael Bay, one of the film’s producers, has spoken about the script (Latino Review spotted his comments, via Screen Rant).

After some jarring comments from producer Michael Bay hinting at extraterrestrial origins for his “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot, frustrated fans at least found a temporary sign of relief when pre-production shut down this summer for script and budget issues. On the business side though, a release date still remains on the calendar for Paramount to distribute the film, and as a recently-leaked script for the film shows, the studio had more than enough reason to worry back in June.

We have to admit, we're a bit suprised anybody cares at all about the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," but apparently quite a few people are invested in Michael Bay's Plantinum Dunes-produced reboot that will be bringing these childhood heroes to the big screen. Again. All sorts of minor controversies have surround the film, including rumors that these pizza eating turtles would be coming from an alien planet, causing enough fervor that director Jonathan Liebesman has told fans to chill and teased them they will go "apeshit" when they see it. And while details have been kept under lock and key for the most part, it seems the script has leaked out into the world, bringing with it some curious tidbits.

It looks like Paramount has finally learned their lesson the very, very hard way. After scuttling three movies slated for a 2012 release into 2013 -- "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," "World War Z" and "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" -- it seems studio executives have decided to actually read the script of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," and they don't like what they see. They really don't like it.

With Michael Bay and Jonathan Liebesman's plans to reboot the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" as aliens or something causing an absurd amount of shaking-and-crying among folks who should have better things to worry about, the rumor mill continues to churn, and the latest development is that rapper/actor Kid Cudi might have a role in the film.

Let's face it, we see more adaptations than original material in movie theaters. And that's not something new: adapting from plays or novels (and now, other movies and TV shows and video games and board games and action figures) is as old as cinema itself. But what has changed, or at least become more organized and noticeable in the age of the internet, is the way these adaptations are approached even before they hit theaters. Something which quite often, leads to what HitFix's Drew McWeeney terms "fantrums."

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"-gate 2012 has literally knocked a nation and generation of TMNT fans -- who grew up with the unassailable classic 1990 film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and the also the nearly unimpeachable 2007 film, "TMNT" -- for a loop when the shocking revelation was made that the new live-action movie adaptation of 'TMNT,' produced by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes shingle, would no longer feature once-ordinary turtles living in the sewers who mutated into intelligent, human-sized creatures by a discarded canister of toxic waste.

Hell hath no fury like a fanbase scorned. From Bryan Singer's "X-Men" abandoning their traditional yellow spandex to Jennifer Lawrence being too blonde and pale to play Katniss Everdeen in "The Hunger Games," internet fandom is not one to lay down silently when a filmmaker tinkers with iconic elements of their beloved franchises. Most recent to attract the ire of a group of fans was Michael Bay, who gave an interview over the weekend where he said that his upcoming live-action/CGI reboot of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" would reimagine the reptilian heroes as members of an alien race.

The origins of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" have never been terribly complex. Tiny reptiles splashed with a mutagenic ooze, living in the sewers, learning karate, eating pizza. Makes sense, right? Okay, it doesn't, but whatever -- fans have been going with it since the characters' first appearance twenty eight years ago. Now that Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes are producing a new live-action movie adaptation, they've decided that origin wasn't working for them, so they're taken a page from the "Highlander II" playbook: the Ninja Turtles will now be aliens.
