It’s not often you see a director dream team. Often one is hands-off as a producer, shepherding or “godfathering” the film to the screen with the director’s vision. Other times, it’s a collaboration bourne out of years and years of familiarity. And yet, “The Adventures Of Tintin” unites Academy Award-winning blockbuster helmers Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson to bring the story of Herge’s beloved comic strip creation to life.

In an extensive interview with the Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex blog (conducted at last summer's San Diego Comic-Con), Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson discussed their new motion-captured animated adventure "The Adventures of Tintin." While a lot of the interview covers ground that we've all heard before (like Jackson dressing as Captain Haddock in the live action screen test and Spielberg being turned onto 'Tintin' when European critics compared "Raiders of the Lost Ark" to it), but there are also some gems, like how Spielberg seemed artistically liberated by the freedom of the mo-cap world, but admitted he was probably a lousy fit for a traditionally animated movie.

If there's one thing we know for sure, it's that Terry Gilliam is really, really grumpy. And or at least, very hilariously candid. Maybe it's the fact that he's constantly marginalized, besides having the oversized imagination and actor loyalty that would (you'd think) make him a big time Hollywood asset, or that every movie he's involved in seems to be an anguished, never-ending process that results in films as lackluster as "The Brothers Grimm" and "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" (oof). While we haven't been able to depend on quality films (or indeed films at all) from him in the last couple of years, we can at least count on Gilliam shooting his mouth off about big time films and famous filmmakers, because, really, what can the establishment possibly do to him at this point?

With the buzz reaching deafening levels for "The Adventures of Tintin," Steven Spielberg's razzle dazzled 3D animated adaptation of the beloved European comic strip (including its giant overseas haul and recent inclusion in David Edelstein's Top 10 List for 2011), it's easy to forget that when the project was initially announced, the plan was for a series of films, with Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg switching off director/producer duties for at least the first batch of films. But given both filmmakers' busy schedules, when can we even expect another entry? Producer Kathleen Kennedy (who started out as Spielberg's assistant before becoming one of his closest collaborators) says we can expect the next one fairly soon.

While for a big chunk of the world "The Adventures Of Tintin" is old news, having arrived in theaters throughout October and November, for those of us in North America, the film still remains the holiday season treat we're eager to unwrap. The classic comic being brought to life from the minds of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson is tantalizing enough, but there will be one more reason you'll want to scoot to theaters when it opens in December.

Steven Spielberg Reveals Script For ‘Prisoners Of The Sun’ Is Already FinishedRiding on a big wave of positive reviews, the Steven Spielberg-directed, Peter Jackson-produced "The Adventures Of Tintin" begins opening internationally tomorrow and Sony and Paramount will be watching the ticket sales closely. The motion-capture-fueled project was always planned as a trilogy, with plan being that Spielberg would direct the first film, Jackson the second film with the duties on the final installment still not quite mapped out. However, while audiences overseas are familiar with Hergé's animated hero, he's less well known stateside and it will take a strong showing at the box-office to get the followup moving. However, if the early word is any indication, whether you grew up following Tintin in the comics or are brand new to the cowlick haired adventurer, Spielberg and Jackson's film is a pure delight and we called it "one of the best times at the movies we’ve had in a long while." So undoubtedly, the filmmakers are confident that "The Adventures Of Tintin" will connect with audiences as the sequel is already on the horizon.

Across his 40 year career as Hollywood's most beloved filmmaker, Steven Spielberg has tried his hand at many different things -- the blockbuster thrill ride, the family film, the comedy, the war film, hardcore science-fiction, serious dramas and whatever it was that "The Terminal" was, a diverse range of pictures united by that certain Spielberg je-ne-sais-quoi. But there's something he's never tackled directly himself; the animated film. Sure, he's produced TV cartoons like "Animaniacs," and even the occasional big-screen one, like "An American Tail" and "We're Back," but for the most part, the Bearded One has always preferred live action to ink and pixels.

With Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures Of Tintin" set to open internationally in ten days, critics overseas are the first catch to the film and early reviews have started to trickle in. So, what's the word? Well, for the most part -- except for the typically crusty U.K. critics -- it looks like Spielberg has delivered one of the best pieces of pop-entertainment of his career. It seems the trailers and clips so far have just been a teaser to what appears to be a big, joyous slice of entertainment that contains sly references to film history (keep an eye out for a nod to Robert Bresson's "Pickpocket"), top notch motion-capture animation, some fantastic set pieces all in a remarkably lean movie that is Spielberg's shortest to date.
