Last week in The Amazing Race, we talked about the films that had gotten a boost for their Best Picture hopes in the Oscar hunt, and those that had taken a hit, after being unveiled in the awards season. To sum it up: good news for "The Descendants," "Moneyball" and "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy," not great news for anyone else. But of course, while Best Picture is the big prize, there are waves and ripples far beyond that, particularly when it comes down to the acting awards.

Plus Why 'Apes' Actor Andy Serkis Has No Shot At Oscar & Why 'The Help' Is Not A LockSummer is fading away, and we're gearing up for festival season right now: we're packing our bags for Venice, Telluride, Toronto and New York as we speak. And the inevitable consequence of the films that will be making their debuts means that the awards season will start to crystallize a little more. Up to now, most of the films have been under wraps, but we'll soon find out if heavy hitters like "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "The Descendants" and "My Week With Marilyn" will continue to figure into the conversation. But all that is for another time. What interests us this week is those films which won't hit the festivals at all, and won't be seen until the very end of the year.

Last time we talked about the awards race, we were halfway through the year, and it was anyone's game, with only a handful of even vaguely serious contenders emerging both from wide releases, and from the festivals up to Cannes. Our conclusion was that only "Midnight in Paris," "The Artist" and "The Tree of Life" were real contenders, with a handful of other films looking like they might pick up nominations here and there, but unlikely to be in the final ten.

Movies Must Get More Than 5% Of Vote To QualifyThe decision, starting with the 2010 ceremony, to nominate ten films for Best Picture at the Academy Awards was, while not unprecedented, one of the biggest shake-ups in the 80+ years of the Oscars. Widely believed to be driven by plummeting ratings, and the failure of Christopher Nolan's critically praised superhero megahit "The Dark Knight" to pick up a nomination in 2009, the move widened the field, seeing both blockbusters and small indie films sneak in to the final selection. While ratings have picked up, particularly thanks to one of the biggest-grossing awards fields in recent memory this year, the Academy isn't quite done tinkering, with a surprise move being announced this morning that looks to turn the awards race upside down once again.
