The Winners & Losers Of The Summer Of 2014
With the Venice Film Festival kicking off today with the premiere of “Birdman," and this week’s releases being “The November Man” and “As Above, So Below,” it can only mean one thing: summer is over. Labor Day is almost upon us, days are getting shorter, and Oscar season is closing in, and as such, it seems like the perfect time to look back at the summer movie season.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Last month, some details emerged about the plot elements of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" that were dropped or changed. It now looks like many of those elements have emerged in a compilation of deleted scenes for the movie, which have wormed their way online. Running twenty minutes long, the footage includes scenes with the quality everyone wanted more from the widely unloved Marc Webb film: Campbell Scott.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
You almost feel bad for Sony at this point. The studio's relaunch of everyone's favorite webslinger has gone poorly, trailing the Sam Raimi films both commercially and critically, and the fanboys have delivered a thumbs down verdict. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is a mess of a movie that managed to be both overstuffed and underdeveloped, earning the least amount of money of any Spider-Man movie to date. Sony has now been forced to push "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" to 2018, to move "Sinister Six" up 2016, and to quietly take "The Amazing Spider-Man 4" off the calendar. But there is still product to sell, so they've turned to the ever enthusiastic Stan Lee to pitch you on the Collector's Edition of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

The Amazing Spider-Man
Though they've been made since the very beginning of the medium, studios are still learning how to craft sequels. Follow-ups used to be frowned upon, perceived as nakedly commercial tactics that frequently didn't involve the participants of the originals. Then they became elaborate, ongoing serialized stories, ones where filmmakers were permitted to present a full saga in chapters. And now, “franchises” have become something else, a lifeblood of Hollywood, one that has flummoxed Sony in regards to the “Spider-Man” movies.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Earlier this year we broke down The Best & The Worst Of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," and needless to say, there was a lot more of the latter than the former. And as with any big budget tentpole, particularly one racing to get into theaters two years after the first entry, a lot of decisions had to be made about which new characters to introduce, and which others were worth saving for down the road. One of the decisions that grabbed the most headlines was dropping Shailene Woodley's brief appearance as Mary Jane Watson altogether. But as it turns out, there were lots more little things that got shaved away as the movie was written and shot.

Amazing Spider-Man 2
“Where there’s smoke there’s fire.” I kinda hate that term because it always lends credence to every damn rumor out there (the recent Gus Van Sant/”Death Note” rumor of late is false and premature, for example). But maybe it applies here. A few weeks ago it was reported that “The Amazing Spider-Man 3” was going to lose its 2016 date and it may be delayed.

Worst/Disappointing So Far... 2014
We’ve said it before, notably as a lead-in to our recent Best Films Of The Year So Far feature, but 2014 is looking to be a pretty good year for the movies, with a lot more to celebrate than commiserate being unveiled this past six months. And if we can say that the week that “Transformers: Age of Extinction” is the big release, you know we must really mean it. However, as the song goes, along with all the sunshine, there’s gotta be a little rain sometimes, and how would we even know how great some of our high points were if we didn’t periodically experience the lows? Even in the best years, there’ll be a few films that stick in our various craws, and so in our bi-annual attempt to exorcize those demons, here’s a rundown of the films our staff members most disliked this year, thus far.

Marvel Characters That Could Be Movie
What people forget is that while the WB flexes their muscle, Marvel still has a ridiculously untapped listing of characters, both over at Disney as well as other studios like Fox, Universal and Sony.Marvel’s always going to outnumber and outmuscle them in some ways. The WB can only work on making their movies successful on their own terms.

Amazing Spider-Man 2
Amidst all the hoo-ha about the Warner Bros./DC Comics release schedule that landed yesterday, a little tidbit slipped out about when we might next see a film for one of the big rival superhero franchises. Ahead of the release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" earlier this summer, Sony announced a summer 2016 release date for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3," and a similar date for "The Amazing Spider-Man 4" in 2018, with "The Sinister Six" and "Venom" spin-offs also planned at some point.

X-Men: Days Of Future Past
In order to convey that the X-Men are smaller, less-known characters in the Marvel Universe compared to The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man, director Bryan Singer has been given to describe the “X-Men” of late as the “bastard stepchild of the comic-book universe.” And while the X-Men are far from underground or on the fringes, perhaps Singer’s comments do have a tiny bit of merit. While his latest X-picture, “X-Men: Days Of Future Past,” did open to $90.7 million this weekend, that’s far below the forecasted $100+ million the soaring reviews helped project; the film did fall below the opening weekend gross of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Godzilla,” and even the poorly reviewed “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” So yes, ‘Days Of Future Past’ had the 2nd best opening weekend of an X-men movie ever (after "X-Men: The Last Stand"), but relatively, it’s the lowest opening weekend gross of all the summer blockbusters thus far.
