The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Outside of "The Amazing Spider-Man," Sony doesn't have much in the way of live action franchises, and that could be a problem. “It’s creative entropy, and I think there’s been too much of a reliance on ‘Spider-Man.’ They need some other things to build out,” media analyst Harold Vogel has opined. But Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal believes in Spidey, so much so that she's planning to spin a bigger web around the superhero.

How The 'Avengers'-Izing Of Blockbusters Is Killing Movies
Is it enough to just make one movie anymore? In the wake of Marvel’s audacious world-building in an assembly line of completely indistinguishable adventure movies, the studios would answer no. What used to be one series of movies has become a web, one that involves various other series’ and offshoots of one particular brand.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Jamie Foxx
In case you haven't noticed, Hollywood is loving blockbusters at the moment. Superheroes, TV shows turned movies, remakes, fairytales — if you've got an idea, they'll listen, and if it's pre-packaged as a possibility to become a series, hell, that's even better. So, is it any wonder that Sony wants to exploit the rights to any Marvel properties they currently have the film rights to?

While there is still no official casting for "Avengers 2: Age of Ultron," probably because the movie is still a considerable time away from hitting theaters, it looks like Marvel is getting their ducks in a row. Unless something goes horribly wrong, Aaron Taylor-Johnson is pretty much set to play Quicksilver in the movie, with Elizabeth Olsen long rumored to play his sister, Scarlet Witch. Well, consider that rumor confirmed?

While fans long for studios to take bolder risks with comic properties -- R-rated Batman! Gritty Daredevil! -- the bottom line is, as long as these franchises need to answer to shareholders, and make big profits, they have to play within the parameters of mainstream entertainment. Which easily explains this next bit of news...

Welcome to the big time Sarah Gadon. Granted, she kinda already has after bagging the female lead for Universal's "Dracula," but the actress who has recently been cutting her teeth on Cronenberg father/son films ("A Dangerous Method," "Cosmopolis," "Antiviral") is now spinning an even bigger web.

So, now that the filmmakers have it coming down from on high that Sony wants a fourth entry in "The Amazing Spider-man" series -- numbers three and four both got release dates this week -- are they finding their hand forced in stretching the story? Are we going to see the stories stretched out unnecessarily like the finales to "Harry Potter," "Twilight" and "The Hunger Games"? Are they just making it up as they go along?

Well, it looks like the series spawned by Marc Webb will accomplish what Sam Raimi failed to do: get to four films. With a trilogy long expected, the expansion to a fourth film is certainly big news -- especially when the second movie hasn't dropped yet -- and perhaps speaks to Sony's confidence in the series, or their desire not to be left behind in the superhero race.
