The Amazing Spider-Man
Though they've been made since the very beginning of the medium, studios are still learning how to craft sequels. Follow-ups used to be frowned upon, perceived as nakedly commercial tactics that frequently didn't involve the participants of the originals. Then they became elaborate, ongoing serialized stories, ones where filmmakers were permitted to present a full saga in chapters. And now, “franchises” have become something else, a lifeblood of Hollywood, one that has flummoxed Sony in regards to the “Spider-Man” movies.

Amazing Spider-Man 2
Amidst all the hoo-ha about the Warner Bros./DC Comics release schedule that landed yesterday, a little tidbit slipped out about when we might next see a film for one of the big rival superhero franchises. Ahead of the release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" earlier this summer, Sony announced a summer 2016 release date for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3," and a similar date for "The Amazing Spider-Man 4" in 2018, with "The Sinister Six" and "Venom" spin-offs also planned at some point.

Godzilla
Up from the depths, 30 stories tall, “Godzilla” absolutely crushed it this weekend, almost grabbing the highest North American opening weekend of the year. The film was poised to do so with an estimated $98 million weekend, $3 million higher than “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and its $95 million opening in April, but those estimates were evidently slightly too high. Nonetheless, the Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures movie took the top slot with a whopping $93.2 million.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
While "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is slinging its stuff overseas to some rather big office numbers, stateside we continue to wait for the latest adventure in the rebooted franchise. But that just gives Sony more time to make sure everyone comes out next week to see the movie, with the studio expecting an opening approaching $100 million. So to that end, more pics, featurettes and teasers about what's coming in next chapters of the series.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Thanks to the wild success the Marvel cinematic universe has had, rival studios have decided the only sure-fire path to success lies in building an elaborate web of spin-offs and team-up films and nowhere does this plan seem more strained than in Sony's attempt to wring every bit of cash they can from "The Amazing Spider-Man" series. The second entry in the web-slinger's rebooted adventures has yet to arrive in theaters (but you can read our review) but that hasn't stopped the studio from locking down their next few years on the big screen.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Marc Webb
Were it not for the encouragement of Sony chief Amy Pascal, Marc Webb revealed at SXSW last week, “The Amazing Spider-Man” and its upcoming two sequels would’ve passed right by the “(500) Days of Summer” director’s path as “the stupidest thing” he’d ever heard. As vibrant a studio playground as the Marvel franchise has been for Webb the last few years, we’ve been eager to see what he can do outside it, and now it appears he’s been having similar thoughts.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Outside of "The Amazing Spider-Man," Sony doesn't have much in the way of live action franchises, and that could be a problem. “It’s creative entropy, and I think there’s been too much of a reliance on ‘Spider-Man.’ They need some other things to build out,” media analyst Harold Vogel has opined. But Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal believes in Spidey, so much so that she's planning to spin a bigger web around the superhero.

How The 'Avengers'-Izing Of Blockbusters Is Killing Movies
Is it enough to just make one movie anymore? In the wake of Marvel’s audacious world-building in an assembly line of completely indistinguishable adventure movies, the studios would answer no. What used to be one series of movies has become a web, one that involves various other series’ and offshoots of one particular brand.

If you've ever wondered what a contract renegotiation sounds like, well these latest comments from Andrew Garfield should be a guide. Even though Sony has already spun a web of plans all the way through to "The Amazing Spider-Man 4," which has a release date set for May 4, 2018, to hear it from Andrew Garfield, he's not going to go the distance as Peter Parker.
