Emma Stone is about to be launched into the stratosphere this summer. The actress who worked her way up the ladder with considerable charm in a string of films ("Superbad," "Easy A," "Stupid Crazy Love," "The Help") features in her first franchise in "The Amazing Spider-Man." Then later this fall, she'll go all femme fatale alongside the macho cast of "Gangster Squad." But lest you think she doesn't have time to have fun anymore, you'd be mistaken.

While it may seem that the geek set is kinda cool on "The Amazing Spider-Man," let's just keep a couple of things in mind. First, Sony opened "Men In Black III" to over $200 million worldwide this weekend, with the movie topping the box office in 104 countries. And based on that, don't discount the studio's ability to nab the younger crowd -- who they are clearly going for -- and pile 'em into theaters on the long Fourth of July weekend. 'Spider-Man' is hardly down for the count, and his newest Aussie trailer shows it has a few more tricks up its sleeve.

Superhero movies have been split down a pretty clear line when it comes to villains. There are the reality based baddies like we've seen in Christopher Nolan's Batman movies (Bane, The Joker), the more fantastical sort of antagonists like Loki or Red Skull in the Marvel movies, or just plain bizarre like that bad times vibe cloud in "Green Lantern." Marc Webb seems to be straddling the real and fantastical with "The Amazing Spider-Man," the franchise reboot that will see Rhys Ifans move from wife-stealing professor in "The Five-Year Engagement" to scientist-turned-CGI thingy villain.

“Men in Black III” faces a long road to success this weekend, with an inflated budget looming over a public opinion set firmly at “mildly amused,” but Paramount is hoping a little incentive in the form of an IMAX sneak peek will get people in seats for both of their upcoming tentpole productions.

Aw. Awwww. It seems that the international marketing team behind "The Amazing Spider-Man" know the way to our hearts. We've had a whole host of trailers for the superhero reboot (including a four-minute spot only a few days ago), which hits in July, and while there's some promise in them, none have quite convinced us yet that we won't be bored by sitting through another origin story, only a decade after Sam Raimi first took a spin at the material. That being said, we've like the in-context footage that we've seen, principally because of the film's leads, Andrew Garfield ("The Social Network"), who plays web-slinger Peter Parker, and Emma Stone ("Easy A"), who plays his love interest, Gwen Stacy.

Well, you can't say that Sony isn't trying. Launching their new 4 minute super preview of Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man" they boldly proclaim it's the most anticipated film of the summer. Well, maybe behind "Prometheus" and "The Dark Knight Rises." But we will say this latest trailer is probably the best of the lot yet, giving a strong sense of the tone that we can expect from the movie.

Say what you will about “The Expendables 2,” at least they trotted out some amusing persuasion from Terry Crews to advertise the micro-teaser for that film. That's not the case with “The Amazing Spider-Man,” increasingly looking like the kid brother next to this summer's Whedon, Nolan, and Scott offerings, but the film's creative team is trying its hardest to convince you of its import, as its latest TV spot suggests.

With "The Avengers" already in theaters and crushing the box office, and with Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises" looking to deliver the epic finale everyone is hoping for, can Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man" make it three-for-three? Well, the newest (and, presumably, the last) trailer is here and it's pretty… blah. Sony is going to have to go into overdrive to convince people that it's worth sitting through another two hours of "how Peter Parker got his Spider-Man powers," because, really, this trailer isn't convincing anyone.

It feels like the summer movie season has been underway for some time already, given that last month saw the arrival of huge blockbuster "The Hunger Games," as well as "21 Jump Street," an R-rated comedy that's taken an enormously impressive $130 million. And that's even without mentioning those that hoped to be big box office stuff, but fell at the first: "John Carter," already taking its place among the annals of the great flops, and "Wrath Of The Titans," which has taken less than half what its predecessor made domestically.

One of this writer's annual traditions is to take some time out to watch the first, and sadly only, season of "Freaks & Geeks." As fans of the short-lived program know, it was an early stomping ground for the talents of Judd Apatow and Paul Feig, a place where their innate talent to zero in on the truth of the high school experience -- in all its hilarious awkwardness -- and relationships between men and women, first came into full bloom. Of course both have since gone on to bigger things, but it looks like Feig has returned to the hallowed halls once more to punch up one of the biggest comic movies of the year.
