Scarlet With Avengers 2 Elizabeth Olsen
It’s just two years from the nerd singularity — the 2015 summer movie season — and pre-production on “Avengers: Age Of Ultron” has moved along swimmingly. Of the film’s new characters, we know that Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the frontrunner for the role of Quicksilver but the character’s twin sister has been more of a mystery, until now apparently.

You know you're dealing with the obsessive, knotty world of comic book movies when merely announcing the title of a movie can send a legion of dedicated super-fans into a speculative frenzy. This was the case when Marvel unveiled the subtitle for their highly anticipated sequel to last year's "The Avengers," titled "The Avengers: Age of Ultron." (For those without a basement full of long boxes, Ultron was a robot menace that turned out to be one of the team's deadliest foes.) While the movie isn't going to be released until the summer of 2015, details have started to emerge about what to expect from the sequel, with handsome dandy Tom Hiddleston confirming that his fanciful Loki will not be the villain for a second (third, if you count "Thor") time, Edgar Wright clarifying the film's connection to his own "Ant-Man" and "Avengers: Age of Ultron" writer/director Joss Whedon offering further tidbits (including stuff about Thanos and The Vision).

While "Kick-Ass 2" star Aaron Taylor-Johnson has yet to be officially confirmed as Quicksilver in the forthcoming superhero sequel "The Avengers: Age of Ultron," he's been the clear frontrunner for a couple of months now. And just days before the D23 Expo in Anaheim (Disney's version of Comic Con), where Disney is expected to make some major Marvel announcements, Taylor-Johnson spills the beans about his approach to the iconic character. As he's quick to point out to Total Film, he's not officially signed up for the role, but that doesn't stop him from talking about it. A lot.

While cross-property narratives may push the possibilities of comic-book films into new frontiers, the notion can also grind to a halt once character rights come into question. Such is the case with superhero mutants Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, who both play into upcoming sequels “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and therefore the equally held rights of Fox and Marvel. But the idea of side-by-side depictions hasn't fazed Joss Whedon, who said they're a “huge part of ['The Avengers 2'],” and now it seems one-half of his duo is nearing a lock.

Even with promising new footage for their new projects, star-studded panels, and an in-character appearance by Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Marvel Studios still took the lower-key approach to Comic-Con this past weekend, favoring elaboration over any earth-shattering announcements. One of these, the reveal of Ultron as the villain in “The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron” clarified a piece of the film's plot, but director Joss Whedon insists it won't barge into another planned Marvel property.

Well, that was kind of anti-climactic. With Warner announcing an untitled Superman & Batman film for summer 2015 earlier today, fans at Comic-Con were hoping that Marvel Studios would try and top the rival studio with various possible announcements. After all, there's plenty of options, there's been an abundance of talk about Phase 3 films and Marvel has planned two dates for 2016 (May 6, July 8) and one for 2017 (May 5) without revealing what those films will be. But it wasn't meant to be if you were hoping to find out what they were. If you were expecting to receive announcements about "Dr. Strange" or "Black Panther" movies, or more casting about the "Avengers" sequel, it didn't happen.

It was a big week for Joss Whedon who managed to nab several honors at the 2013 Saturn Awards. Not only did he win Best Director for “The Avengers,” but the superhero blockbuster also won Best Science Fiction Film. And though he only served as a writer on the film, he had to be pretty proud that “The Cabin in the Woods” took home Best Horror/Thriller Film. Before Joss could accept those awards, though, he had to navigate the minefield of reporters looking to get the next big exclusive out of him. While on the red carpet, Joss discussed sharing Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch with the upcoming X-Men film and why he didn’t initially believe in “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

So remember all that talk about Robert Downey Jr. walking away from Iron Man, conveniently timed around the release of "Iron Man 3"? Well, it looks like cooler heads and/or lots of cash has prevailed as Tony Stark isn't going anywhere...as far as The Avengers are concerned anyway....

Though he’s busy doing press for the micro-budget Shakespeare adaptation “Much Ado About Nothing,” current King of the World Joss Whedon hasn’t taken his mind off the unenviable task of following up the mega-hit that was “The Avengers.” And while we already know about some of the characters that will appear in the sequel -- Thanos, Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch -- Whedon has let us know who we shouldn’t expect to see in “The Avengers 2.”

So, "Man of Steel" flies into theaters with advance screenings tonight if you got your Walmart-branded tickets, so we can get back to talking about the Marvel universe, right? While Warner Bros. is getting their sea legs with their DC Comics properties, hoping Superman can lead them to a bright franchise future, Marvel is multiple movies and billions of dollars ahead, with much, much more to come. While WB figures out how to get their first team-up movie sorted out with "Justice League," Marvel has already knocked out "The Avengers" and has "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "The Avengers 2" on the way. Mega-world-building!? Not so fast.
