Well, that was fast. Last night Samuel L. Jackson hit "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" and confirmed that Nick Fury would be in both "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Thor." He also dropped the bomb that tomorrow, he was going to be screentesting with actresses for some kind of companion role in the upcoming "The Avengers" telling Fallon, "I gotta screen test like five actresses on Friday. They have this new character that’s my sidekick or something, that’s with me all the time."

There's not a lot of news knocking around in the week between Christmas and New Year, and so fairly ludicrous rumors that wouldn't necessarily get the time of day in busier periods get more traction than they would otherwise. Two stories were doing the rounds last week, stories that have a very significant connection.

OK, so while Demi Lovato won't make her post-rehab career resurgence in Marvel's mega-comic movie "The Avengers," THR has revealed Marvel is going to be casting somebody in another female role that is apparently up for grabs.

Geeks have been worried over the past few days as gossip site Radar Online revealed that Demi Lovato was up for a role in Joss Whedon's "The Avengers" that will be shooting in the spring. "'The Avengers' is ruined!" comic nerds cried, but as it turns out and as we pretty much figured, there isn't much truth to the rumor.

It turns out the Albuquerque Journal has either a very nerdy, or very detailed oriented researcher.

It looks like it's a Merry Christmas for Marvel fans. Thanks to the Albuquerque Journal (via AICN), it seems that the plot of 2012's biggest tentpole, "The Avengers," will possibly revolve around, or at least involve, the conflict between two alien races, the Kree and the Skrulls.

Awards season is firmly underway now, and the calendar of dinners, drinks and screenings held by studios to pimp their hopeful nominees is already filling up. But if you're not an Academy voter, what does this mean for you? Surely it's just a bunch of actors talking about lame things like motivation and craft, right? No talk of superhero movies of any kind, presumably...

Right now, Marvel is behaving a lot like they just graduated from college. Yes, that "Iron Man" internship opened a lot of doors, but the "Hulk" side venture didn't really yield the results they were hoping for. Their side projects for next summer -- "Thor" and "Captain America" -- do show promise, and it's good to see them taking initiative. But, if reports are to be believed, the folks at the House of Ideas are looking underneath their sofas and mattresses for extra change, because "The Avengers" might be a bit too costly for their inexperience.

The knock-on effects of the 2007 writers' strike have been felt heavily in the last few years. Last summer saw the obviously rushed likes of "Wolverine," "Terminator Salvation," "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and "GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra;" all of which were patently harmed by the disruption caused by months of inaction by screenwriters, while the films were in or gearing up for production. Hell, even "Star Trek," easily the strongest of the tentpoles that year, had script issues.

Actor Says He's Game If Marvel Will Have Him; If More 'Hulk' Films Are Made With Mark RuffaloWe recently had a chat with writer/director/actor/cool dude Tim Blake Nelson on the occasion of his latest, "Leaves of Grass," hitting DVD (full interview coming soon). One of the questions we were most curious to ask revolved around the ongoing Marvel universe, and if we'd see him there again after appearing in Louis Leterrier's "The Incredible Hulk" as scientist Samuel Sterns, last seen beginning a curious mutation into a character comic fans know as the Leader.
