So here we are. The moment that basically every film fan (even if some are openly hostile to the idea) sees as their Superbowl; the announcement of the Academy Award nominations, for the 85th time, in this case. Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took to the stage at 5.30 PST to deliver the news, after months of the usual feverish speculation. So how did things turn out?

Judging in terms of pure profitability, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” has to be considered one of the biggest hits of the year. Off a meager $10 million budget it has gone on to gross over $46 million domestically and $134 million worldwide – and that’s before considering that it could go on to pocket a whole lot more from its home video release should it nab some of the Oscar nominations that it’s currently being talked up for. But not content with gobbling up all of 2012’s grey pound, screenwriter Ol Parker is currently penning a follow up for Fox Searchlight.

So, you think only blockbuster tentpoles and comic book movies get sequels? Guess again. Hollywood is beginning to realize that old people go to movies too. And accordingly, more movies feature Old People Doing Stuff are getting made. Need some examples? Dustin Hoffman's "Quartet" and "Stand Up Guys" with Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin are getting Academy consideration runs. While The Weinstein Company will drop the elderly, feel good choir movie "Song For Marion" next year. And oh yeah, a little movie called "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" made $134 million worldwide this year. And now Fox Searchlight wants more.

Maybe that sequel will happen after all. Very clever, Universal. First, you announce that "Snow White and the Huntsman" is tracking a bit weak, possibly in the low 30s. Then, there's a "leak" that you've backtracked on a sequel since getting David Koepp to pen a follow-up. And now, with reports that 'Huntsman' may have actually connected with the young males they were trying to entice, registering a $55 million opening, there's great rejoicing for the film, particularly in the wake of the absolutely pathetic "Battleship" returns.

Well, people, it’s here. Each year, starting around Memorial Day and continuing through the early weeks of summer, we find ourselves knee-deep in a period marked by the release of monstrously large popcorn flicks, movies that show off stars and special effects while raking in the dough. That’s right: it’s the season of the terminal illness drama-comedy. And the studios aren’t wasting any time with two films already released this first weekend. Oh, wait – just kidding. It’s Summer Blockbuster Season! And we’re off to a great start with Marvel’s debut picture this weekend. Buckle up.

You know, sometimes all it takes for a bunch of old white privileged people to learn how truly magical and delightful life can really be is a trip to a foreign country where those plucky locals may be living in poverty, but gosh darn it, they are just so happy. Isn't that inspiring?

If the film “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” has thus far escaped your attention, it’s probably because you don’t spend your afternoons unironically knitting wool hats for your eight grandchildren, nor do you pine for five o’clock to roll around so you can hit the bingo lounge and kick back with a six-pack of prune juice. If you think that’s a patronizing caricature of what happens after you hit sixty-five, wait until you set your peepers on the production stills for the actual film, which have cropped up on Fox Searchlight's site. The plot, which will be invariably be described as “feel-good” and “heart-warming” when the film's released, appears to involve a group of senior citizens who are hoodwinked into checking into an apparently plush luxury retirement home in India, but all is not what it appears to be. What hilarious high-jinks will ensue for the film’s fresh-faced stars (Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton and Celia Imrie) we can only speculate. It does vaguely resemble “The Darjeeling Limited” with its theme of self-discovery in one of the most culturally rich countries on the planet, except with a combined age of 236.
