 The Best Shots Of 2013
Continuing our look at the Best Of 2013, we've come down to definitely the smallest, most fleeting and ephemeral of cinematic elements: the single shot. If in the living organism of a movie, a shot is perhaps just a single cell, but it doesn’t mean that on occasion that one cell can’t take on an importance, weight and memorability totally disproportionate to its size. And in each of the cases we list here, it was a shot that at least some of us found irrevocably “sticky” — an image that, even during the film, had leapt out at us and caught us by surprise, and the one that lingered longest after the credits rolled. In some cases, it’s a shot of particular cinematographic beauty, but we tried to stay away from those that were only that, and instead focus on shots that invested the experience of watching whichever film it was with some deeper thematic significance and/or featured a cat looking at his own reflection.

Spring Breakers
With one movie to promote heavily on both sides of the pond ("The World's End") and another major franchise movie gearing up ("Ant-Man"), that Edgar Wright had time to keep watching films enough to put together a top ten of 2013 is pretty impressive. But it comes with a caveat: like many folks, the last-month crush of films makes it hard to catch up with everything, so be forewarned, this list was compiled with Wright, at the time of putting it together, having not yet seen a handful of movies including "12 Years A Slave," "Dallas Buyers Club" or "American Hustle" (all of which open in the U.K. in 2014).

2013: The Best Soundtracks
Some people—a convenient straw man, for instance—might argue that the days of the movie soundtrack are numbered. “From & Inspired By The Motion Picture” releases are less and less common, it's hard to find music videos for specially written singles that feature footage from the movie in the way that was so common in the 1990s (thank God), and in the iTunes and YouTube era, you can find the one song that you love from a movie without needing to pick up a whole CD of stuff you don't care about.

The Bling Ring,
Why do kids want to live like celebrities? There's no definitive answer to that question, but Sofia Coppola explores the mindset of that kind of youth in "The Bling Ring." Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival before hitting theaters this summer, you might have missed the writer/director's take on a culture obsessed with brands and fame. And whether you're now catching up or if you're a fan of the movie, we've got a pretty great prize pack for some lucky readers.

Whether you’ve seen “The Bling Ring” or read the film’s track listing, you’ll know that the soundtrack included a few Kanye West tracks. In an interview with Pitchfork, Sofia Coppola and her long-time musical supervisor Brian Retzell revealed that not only did West’s involvement help get the others (Frank Ocean and Rick Ross in particular) to sign on for the ‘Bling’ soundtrack, but that Coppola and Retzell originally had approached West for a much more integral role in the film’s music.

The Bling Ring
American cinema seems preoccupied with the emptiness of excess, at least in the first half of 2013. Baz Luhrmann luxuriates in the meaningless wealth of "The Great Gatsby," while Harmony Korine put his own twisted spin on the dark soul of the American dream in "Spring Breakers." And now comes Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," another look at the at-any-cost pursuit of celebrity and the worship of brand names, but it doesn't bring anything new to a conversation that seems to have run out of things to say.

Bad Girl Group feature
This week, Sofia Coppola’s “The Bling Ring” features a group of young people, mostly female, who break into the homes of the rich and famous to steal their stuff, mostly for kicks. You can read our full review here, and while of course it’s a movie about celebrity obsession and the ennui of youthful privilege, it can also, in its central female characters and group dynamic, be read as an evolution of a subgenre with a decades-long spotty history: the bad girl gang movie.

Okay, so as we noted in our review from the Cannes Film Festival, Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" doesn't exactly break down the door of insight into the emptiness and excess of celebrity culture and the pursuit of it. That said, it does have some fun along the way. And most notably, it's Paris Hilton's house (and yes, it's actually Paris Hilton's house in the movie) that provides the thieving gang of teens the most enjoyment on their crime spree. In fact, they go back to it more than once...
