Forget Jason Bourne....meet Aaron Cross. Universal has the tricky task of enticing viewers to be 'Bourne' again (ha ha) with a new installment in the franchise that links to the past mostly in name, and has a new face in Jeremy Renner leading the charge. And while the teaser trailer did a good job of keeping things mysterious while promising to deliver on action, the new full-length trailer, which just premiered at Apple, puts Renner front and center and gives a more complete picture of the world we're going to be stepping into.

Of all the summer blockbusters on the way in the coming months, "The Bourne Legacy" is the one that's been keeping its cards closest to its chest. Even against the relatively secretive likes of "The Dark Knight Rises," Tony Gilroy's film, the fourth in the 'Bourne' franchise and the first without original star Matt Damon, has only unveiled a handful of stills and one stylish, '70s-style TV trailer, with only the barest minimum of details about the film revealed so far (many of them in our own chat with Gilroy).

With the summer movie season underway after the opening of "The Avengers" last weekend, there's one movie that's taking a stealthier approach: "The Bourne Legacy," the fourth film in the blockbuster Robert Ludlum spy franchise, and the first without star Matt Damon in the lead role. Bringing in writer-director Tony Gilroy, who penned all three films to date before he went on to find his own success as a helmer with the Oscar-nominated "Michael Clayton," the film sees Jeremy Renner star as Aaron Cross, an operative from a CIA program more advanced than Operation Treadstone, with new cast members Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac and Stacy Keach joining the returning Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Albert Finney.

While the works of Robert Ludlum inspired a handful of movies through the '70s, '80s and '90s, it was the 'Bourne' series of films that truly brought his books to life on the big screen in a vital way. Jason Bourne has already become the basis for a certain kind of hero or thriller, and the trilogy of films starring Matt Damon have made an indelible mark on the action movie landscape. However, when Universal, Greengrass and Damon parted ways during the development of a planned 'Bourne 4,' the future of the franchise was a question mark. Enter Ben Smith. A former agent who represented the Ludlum estate, and a producer at Captivate Entertainment, he helped get 'Bourne' back on its feet, and the result is Tony Gilroy's upcoming "The Bourne Legacy" starring Jeremy Renner. The film arrives later this summer, adding a new chapter to the series Ludlum birthed.

It feels like the summer movie season has been underway for some time already, given that last month saw the arrival of huge blockbuster "The Hunger Games," as well as "21 Jump Street," an R-rated comedy that's taken an enormously impressive $130 million. And that's even without mentioning those that hoped to be big box office stuff, but fell at the first: "John Carter," already taking its place among the annals of the great flops, and "Wrath Of The Titans," which has taken less than half what its predecessor made domestically.

In many ways, Universal has taken great pains to explain to audiences that "The Bourne Legacy" starring Jeremy Renner is well-connected to the 'Bourne' series they know and love (and grossed $945 million worlwide). All the while, they're trying to explain that Jeremy Renner is not taking over for Matt Damon. It's a brand new series, yet it's connected to the same universe, got that?

The summer movie season is only a few weeks away. Indeed, in some parts of the world, it's already underway. Due to the Euro 2012 football tournament, the rest of the world are getting several films, including "The Avengers" and "Prometheus" early, and many territories were unlucky enough to get "Battleship" in their multiplexes last week. But things kick off in the U.S. on May 4th with "The Avengers," with roughly one massive tentpole following every week after that.

This past weekend, two pricey fantasy epics hit movie screens in the form of Warner Bros.' swords-and-sandal sequel "Wrath Of The Titans" and Relativity's comic fairy tale "Mirror Mirror." And while their audiences were, in theory, different (with Tarsem's Snow White picture skewing much younger), neither fared as well as hoped, "Wrath of the Titans" ending up with barely half of the original film's opening weekend, around $35 million, while "Mirror Mirror" failed to clear the $20 million mark, despite the presence of Julia Roberts.

So far in 2012, Universal has been flexing their box office muscle hard thanks to the success of a couple of no frills action vehicles. Mark Wahlberg's midbudgeted ($25 million not including P&A) "Contraband" is already over $70 million worldwide (most of that from the domestic box office), with a number of foreign territories still to open. Meanwhile, audiences are loving the Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds pic "Safe House," with the movie pushing its way to number one in its second weekend, with the film already outpacing "Contraband" and on track to bag over $100 million at the domestic box office alone. And while the latter pic is pricier ($85 million plus P&A and whatever percentage off the top Denzel gets) the success of these two films illustrate that bare bones, raw knuckle action not only sells, but Universal knows how to sell it. So where does Jason Bourne fit in?
