Jeremy Renner has a big year coming up. He's already sat on the sidelines for "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol," he's one of "The Avengers," but the real test will be when he steps into the shoes of Matt Damon as the lead of Universal's big spy franchise, "The Bourne Legacy." The lid's been pretty tight on the film so far, but a trailer's arrived via Apple, and it's given us our first real look at Renner in action. And it's not quite what we were expecting.

Another week into 2012, another cavalcade of posters hitting the web for a handful of new releases. First up is a new poster for Jonah Hill's '80s cop reboot, "21 Jump Street." The film isn't out until March but word out of a test screening last week was very strong, indicating that this is a rare spring release worth actually looking forward to. Riding the success of his understated turn in "Moneyball," the film finds Hill back in familiar, R-rated comedy territory, hitting theaters on March 16th. [Facebook]

We were excited when Jeremy Renner landed a role in "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" because we figured it would be his first big prime tentpole, in a movie that would let him show off both his acting chops and action adventure skills. Well, that's only have true. We should have realized that the 'Mission' movies are the Tom Cruise Show, and especially in 'Ghost Protocol,' pretty much the entire supporting cast spends the movie listening to Ethan Hunt. Renner doesn't say much and doesn't do much either in the movie. But, he'll get another swing at the pinata in "The Bourne Legacy."

Well here we are, in the brave new world of 2012. And at present, it's not too scary, although we swear that we'll beat the next person to death who makes a joke about the Roland Emmerich film. And after a 2011 that turned out to be a pretty decent year for cinema (if not necessarily one for the ages), we're now staring out across a few months that seem fairly barren, as the early months of the year always do.

After delivering acclaimed performances in ensemble projects like “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town,” Jeremy Renner is poised on the edge of mainstream success, especially given the fact that his next role finds him sharing the screen with Tom Cruise in the highly anticipated sequel, “Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.” But after that, he'll be in a lead role in “The Bourne Legacy,” and Renner told The Playlist that his work in 'Mission: Impossible' more than prepared him for his next action franchise. “Tom [Cruise] has prepared me for, especially ‘Bourne,’ but all of them – ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and then ‘The Avengers,” he said during press rounds this week in Los Angeles.

What's "The Bourne Legacy," the newest film in the franchise without Matt Damon, all about? Well, it's directed by Tony Gilroy who steered "Michael Clayton" to seven Oscar nominations for his first feature-length effort, it's lead by heir-apparent star Jeremy Renner ("Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol," "The Hurt Locker") and it also includes Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac, and returning members of the 'Bourne' franchise Joan Allen, Scott Glenn and Albert Finney.

For a while, the rumor was floating that the spinoff film "The Bourne Legacy" would in some way utilize Matt Damon's Jason Bourne character, possibly in a cameo. Hell, the guy's already in the title. This ignores the politics of tentpole moviemaking, as the very act of rebooting serves many strategies, one of them being, "We're sick of paying the people who bring us success." So even with the 'Bourne' franchise achieving ever-escalating box office grosses ($442 million worldwide on the last entry), Damon, director Paul Greengrass and Universal couldn't reach a suitable agreement regarding a fourth film, leading to the significantly cheaper team of director Tony Gilroy and star Jeremy Renner.

Well, well. While reports have been saying that the newest installment in the Bourne franchise would be shying away, it looks like the key figures of Operation Treadstone won't all be relegated to the rearview.
