In what has apparently become something of a tradition on the Croisette, this evening saw a select group of journalists forgo tempting Official Selection screenings to attend instead the starry, champagne-fuelled preview of The Weinstein Company’s forthcoming slate. Perhaps not quite as salivating a prospect as last year’s auteur-heavy brand-new lineup, which included early glimpses of “Django Unchained,” “The Master,” and “Silver Linings Playbook” it’s still a mark of TWC’s high standing on the awards circuit that what is essentially an invite-only marketing event got so many clamoring to attend. Well, that and the canapes (foie gras toastinis, breaded shrimp and mini eclairs, if you must know). Oh, and the presence of the legendary Harvey Weinstein.

Hitting the promo circuit to help get the word out about his film with Noomi Rapace and Colin Farrell, the actor has mostly succeeded in getting the word out about himself, easily and amazingly giving out his opinions on breasts, the election, his business endeavors and more. David Oyelowo is one of those actors who has had a very, very good year. If you can say anything about Lee Daniels, it's that he's got a distinct voice. Whether it always works is another topic entirely, but over the course of the three films now -- "Shadowboxer" (which got a great Commentary Of The Damned feature at the AV Club), awards horse "Precious" and the pulpy, divisive "The Paperboy" -- he has made pictures that are completely his own. But it seems that his next effort, "The Butler," which boasts yet another star-studded ensemble, will see the director dialing it back a bit.

First, “True Blood” fans may feel a tinge of excitement when they read that Bon Temps, Louisiana resident Lafayette Reynolds may be stepping away to the screen for a moment. Beloved “True Blood” actor Nelsan Ellis will be lending his talent to “Precious” director Lee Daniels’ upcoming “The Butler,” which has recently been lining up an ensemble consisting of Liam Neeson, John Cusack, Forest Whitaker, Robin Williams, Jane Fonda, Cuba Gooding Jr., and frankly more actors than we have space for here. Ellis will take on the role of Martin Luther King Jr., which we assume will be no easy feat, but certainly a rewarding one if all goes according to plan. “The Butler” tells the true story of Eugene Allen, a White House butler (Whitaker) who served eight Presidents over the span of three decades and was witness to all kinds of history and famous people.
