Box office trends exist for a reason, and this weekend only cements that September by and large sucks, box office-wise – this weekend saw the worst results in several years, with no movie cracking the $10 million mark and the whole top ten taking only $46 million in total, a 22% drop from the equivalent frame last year. It's not like studios can help it: the product just isn't very appealing for the general audience (although one wonders if "Gangster Squad" might have picked things up – the film was originally set to open this weekend before Aurora-mandated reshoots put it back to January). The profits aren't entirely too thrilling for Lionsgate, but they have effectively ruled a flimsy roost for four weeks straight with "The Possession" taking the top spot for the second weekend in a row with $9.5 million following two weeks of "The Expendables 2" dominance. We use the term "dominance" loosely.

As we transition into the unofficial start of autumn, the films take on a similarly seasonal tone, ranging from somber to bleak. Larceny, inebriation, lechery, and gore pepper this weekend’s releases, creating a veritable smorgasbord of tributes to deadly sinning. There’s also the odd comedy, sure, but even they seem to have dipped into the dark debauchery bucket for inspiration. But don’t fret too much, friends: if you’re starting to feel SADD, there’s always the IMAX/3D rerelease of your favorite childhood action flick to patron. Enjoy!

Sneaking into theaters with little to no fanfare at the tail end of summer, "The Cold Light of Day," a dramatically inert and visually muddy thriller from Mabrouk El Mechri ("JCVD"), is so bad that its mere presence in theaters feels like the behind-the-scenes machinations of some kind of contractual obligation instead of actual enthusiasm on anyone's part. It's telling that the movie was released in the United Kingdom back in April (it was rightly savaged) and is only finally coming out here.

Well, even though it won't hit theaters stateside until the fall, "The Cold Light Of Day" actually rolls into theaters in the U.K. next weekend, and as such, a bunch of new stuff has hit the web to get the word out across the pond.

Could Keira Knightley be angling for her second Oscar nomination this fall? You can bet Focus Features and Joe Wright hope so (and we're predicting she will) as "Anna Karenina" now has a solid release date lined up, with "The Cold Light Of Day" getting a new date and "Lola Versus" now appearing on the calendar.

If Bruce Willis is your Dad in a movie, and he says he's just a business consultant for the government, chances are, he's probably something up to something else. But someone didn't tell that to Henry Cavill, who finds himself dodging bullets in Madrid in the first trailer for "The Cold Light Of Day."
